6.6L gas or Duramax for upcoming purchase?

I have the 3500 6.6 gasser and love it. It is more than enough truck to pull my 32' 8000 # camper. Diesel is more expensive to buy and maintain. The fuel costs difference sare negliable as diesel costs more, but you get better MPG. So in the end, do you need the extra powwer of a diesel, if so, thats your answer if not the gasser may be right for you.
Good to have in case you need it. Love Diesel.

Really it is about your usage, I shifted back to gas in 2020 after 13 years of diesel (Ford 6.7, GMC LMM) My fuel milage has not changed much unloaded, mostly 15-17 mpg for both fuels. Towing the Diesel did get better milage and towed better. I don’t tow enough to justify the extra cost and maintenance of the diesel. I will never have a truck for over 100,000 miles so don’t really care about that, really not more than 50,000.
I would not discount the gas, or the diesel. Just choose what will work best for your usage and budget.

I want to thank everyone for your responses. After considering both the D-Max and gasser, I couldn’t help but get the diesel as the 8,600lb truck feels “sporty” and light on its heavy feet. Wait, that really doesn’t make sense lol. What I’m trying to say is the diesel gives me smiles per miles. The additional maintenance cost isn’t something that was a deal breaker for me. I’m sure the gasser is a stud engine, but the sound and feel of the diesel is intoxicating. Now, please don’t be upset at me but I kinda went to the dark side as the ZR2 called my name a little more than the AT4. Both are amazing. I hope I don’t get flamed for posting pics of my ZR2 in an AT4 forum :p Cheers.
How has it treated you after 8 months? Any issues due to your city driving? Have you had to take time to go for drives to complete a regen or get the engine hot enough?
I’m looking at either gas or diesel because I’m planning to get into a business that would require pulling some trailers. It won’t be anything super heavy, so gas sounds like the better choice for my needs, but lots of these discussions say just get the diesel so you don’t regret it. What do you think?

Welcome.

Well, since you don't actually need an HD truck and you didn't mention that budget/money is an object, just go for the diesel. Sure, it's stupid expensive and will cost you much, much more in the long run, but it'll be a helluva lot more fun.
If you aren’t able to do your own “simple” maintenance on any vehicle, let alone a diesel, than you deserve to pay all the $ in maintenance costs diesel or not. With all the videos available on oil changes and fuel filter replacements, it’s not out of reach for the average Joe. Oil changes and fuel filter replacement are both very easy to do. And can be done in way less time and at a fraction of the price compared to taking it to the dealership. Plus, there are techs out there that don’t treat your investment properly. There is so much out there in the interwebs - just do the research, read your owners manual, and use factory recommended products / parts which can be purchased at pretty much any auto-parts store and you’re not going to void any warranty. So, saying maintaining a diesel is more $ is not entirely accurate as compared to a gasser. And, the MPG alone compares to gasser is actually a savings in the long run with the 3.0. Even here in Commie Country California. 🤣

My 2024 HD gas is the easiest oil change I have ever done. I have never paid for one in 40 years. Plug and filter are right there, so easy. I wish my Jeeps were that easy.

Totally agree. I put a fumoto valve on the oil pan so I don’t need a single tool to do the oil change. I can change the oil, lube the lube points and rotate the tires in 20 minutes.

I have had my 2024, GMC AT4 2500 6.6 Gas for almost 2 years and absolutely love it.
I don't get that check engine light anxiety that I did on my last diesel (2018 L5P-Z71 CC)
I have almost 32K miles on it. Love the 10spd trans. The only thing it has been back for besides regular maintenance is the tailgate recall.
This thing tows my 16' box trailer with 2 seat Can Am like nothing. I won't ever get a huge trailer, if I go any bigger than what I have it would be 26-28' toy hauler...between 7-9k lbs. empty.

Also, I'm stoked...I just paid this thing off!
Love it and get tons of compliments on it...even from the diesel guys!

If you don’t tow it’s a no brainer my dad has the gas and I have the diesel….. upfront cost, and maintenance of the diesel is by far more expensive. But I tow 50% of the time.

Had my 2024 3500 6.6 gasser since September last year, I tow 16k 5th wheel in Colorado. It's does really well even through the mountains, just need to keep an eye on the transmission temp.

Sure, it's half the power of the diesel, but saves a ton of money in purchase/fuel/maintenance and no worrying about DPF/DEF etc. 100% would buy the 6.6 gasser with Alison 10 speed again....I'm less pleased with the fit and finish of the features and electronics though
What MPG do you get city and hwy? I heard its close to the same as the diesel's now with the added DPF and crap on the diesel.
