2024 2500 AT4 - Issues (1 month in review)

I can't say I don't disagree with most of what you said.
Hoping the turn signal turning on the side cameras is a future OTA upgrade. At least let me decide via an on/off toggle if I want it or not. It's awesome towing. Wish I had it all the time.
The console shifter seems to be a thing with HD trucks. I would have much happier if it was where the trailer brake controller is because it's really annoying that I can't see 1/3 of my beautiful centre screen because of the shifter. I think the designers never drove the truck to notice that when you are in drive the shifter blocks the screen!
I already bought rubber covers for the usb plugs. I'll rarely use them as I use the wireless charger. When I do want to use, I expect that they work if I protect them.
The biggest gripe I have is OnStar. Let it die GM. Don't try to force me into it. Give me the option to make the system use Android. Don't give me messages saying I need a subscription to use maps when I can just go to android auto and use maps from my phone. Don't stop reading me text messages because I don't have an OnStar subscription. Let me use google assistant from my phone. I paid $100k CAD for a truck that I need to pay $30/ month for an OnStar subscription? Come on. You aren't making me a return buyer by trying to squeeze money from me after already dropping way too much in the first place.
Other than those issues, I love my truck.

Haha I won't know what I am missing in my new AT4. I am coming from a 2009 Nissan Titan. Still I wish I hadn't of read this. I ended up with an AT4 for a couple reasons.

1. I love functional beds/ tailgates. That tailgate is something I would use. (This is why I bought the Titan, the functionality of the bed)
2. Best looking HD truck by far. I never liked Rams or their interiors. I liked the Fords ok up until the new one, I hate the rounded off look.
3. The shocks would have been my first upgrade, and the AT4 has them already.
4. I like the interior redesign.
5. The duramax just keeps getting better
6. Almost forgot- Independent front Suspension For me, this truck will be 90 percent play and 10 percent work. I won't be beating the heck out of it.
7 Best camera system- My wife and I will be doing a little off road exploring and there are times when she will take the camper and truck on her own....a good camera system will make her feel more comfortable.

The original post guy should probably own a ridgeline. :) (just messin' with ya brother). Remember, these forums are a funnel for complaints, so you're going to hear more atypical problems than you can imagine. I'm coming from many years of Toyota Tundras, and this AT4 HD absolutely walks all over them, in every way I can think of. I researched and test drove nearly every make and model for close to 2 years. Then the '24 came out. I drove several different trim levels over a 3 month period and it was the AT4 HD hands down. I've had it since April, and have experienced none of the problems countless people have told me are wrong with the truck. The ONLY negative is the google operating system they shoved down our throats. I'm a software engineer and I can honestly say google releases software that is not even suitable for beta release (beta = testing versions), and it steals as much of your personal information is can get its grimy hands on. I hear people talking about the radio staying on. I just read release notes explaining it does that when the software is updating, although I wouldn't bet too much money on that being the reason for every time that happens to me. I also don't know yet if it's an Apple problem, a google problems, or both, but when I really need CarPay, it doesn't connect, and nothing I do fixes it. Restart phone, turn truck completely off (and that's a task...I never know when it completely electronically off....), restart both the truck and phone.....still no CarPlay. And no joke, it's always when a really need it. ugh. Then later in the day, when I don't need it, it connects flawlessly.

I can attest to you that the off-road capability is really good. I volunteer with an ATV club to fix trails. There is one spot where my tundra would get stuck every time. My AT4 walks right through it. I momentarily feel like I'm getting stuck, then that rear locker kicks in and away I go, through the mud, rocky climbs, everything. The downhill assist is priceless when coming back down the rocky climbs. I thought it was stupid until I tried it. Now, I use it often. You can even adjust the speed. and Yes, the cameras are also priceless off road.

New member, long-time GM/GMC owner. Z71, Tahoe, Yukon Denali, etc. GM homer for a long time. I'm going to post this more to get it off my chest because my wife has told me to stop complaining to her. It is simply my take on having this vehicle for a short time. Many gripes are minor, I agree. Some may be I missed something in the poorly executed menu/option arrangement. Maybe some will be addressed in updates. But this is a RANT so if you don't want to know what they screwed up on this truck move on.

Received my 2024 2500 AT4 about a month ago after waiting 10 weeks or so. 2000 miles. Duramax. Not many extra options (5th wheel prep, bed mat, cover, etc.), it pretty much has everything you'd want in the AT4 package to begin with.

First impressions:

  1. It is a big, beautiful vehicle. It is a visually well designed. The front end changes are impressive. I get compliments everywhere I go.

  2. The truck is very comfortable to ride in. Good armrest heights, comfortable seats, good visibility, cold AC, etc. Several 4+ hour trips and I've been content the entire way (mostly, see below).

  3. Fuel economy wasn't my target with this truck (obviously) but despite not being broken in is getting right at 18 mpg mixed driving. Sweet spot is between 55 and 62 mph where it just doesn't seem to have to work to keep those speeds.

  4. Can't comment much on towing, I drug my 24' CC a short hop and it didn't even know it was back there (~6500#). Plenty of power and acceleration from the Duramax.

  5. Step locations, exterior fit and finish, etc. seem well thought out and built.

But now the stuff that is probably going to make me move on from this truck in short order. It seems like every day I find another GM oversight, shortcut or outright failure. I've had several "normal function" issues the dealer won't address already as well. Brake pedal has 1" of pure slop, and slaps. Tap the brake - SLAP. You can't even really tap the brake because the first inch does nothing. Every time. Supposedly it is the shifter release which isn't true because this is driving, not to release from park to a gear. Cut the wheel hard at slow speed it squeals - like a belt squeal. Again, supposedly normal function (for a 30 year old Plymouth maybe). And yes, I know the "tick" is normal but why make all the effort to quiet the diesel exhaust only to create a typewriter on a bullhorn. If you are near anything - wall, car, divider, etc. it is obscene. Cut the truck off at the drive through, because you can't talk. Get away from the divider unless you want to Chinese torture your mind with ticks inside. Have people stare at your beautiful truck making the most obnoxious sound at idle. You can hear it clearly from a football field away. Perfectly normal I'm told, glad my exhaust is a little quieter.

Bottom line the vehicle technology is AWFUL made worse by the broken Android based interface. GM blew it, IMHO. Does it look pretty, sure. Does it work or did the engineers actually think about anything besides slapping a wide tablet on the dash - no. This is not a technology package designed for the truck, or really for any vehicle. It is just a basic tablet with a few options stuck on the screen. I can't even describe what the interface is. Android v.10?

1. Instead of designing the truck for the column shifter they simply took most of the 1500 dash and threw it in. The result, the column shifter blocks the left 1/3 of the nice new screen. It interferes with the physical home button, volume knob and completely blocks the first two radio presets and digital home button. This is a major bust.

2. Because this tablet is equivalent to a 4 year old Amazon Fire HD in kids mode, of course you can't change locations of the home button or retile your screen. Left side are the menu buttons, home is fixed. Station presets are locked to the bottom.

3. Then inches of wasted screen space - SiriusXM album covers are a 1.5" thumbnail. And you've got 6" inches of nothing background. Cameras, although amazing don't fill the screen either.

4. Hope you like a clock or Google because those are your only options for the right 1/3 of the entire screen. An ANALOG wall clock or GOOGLE. In red, no color choices for you. If I could just move that to the left side behind the column shifter it would make sense, but no. This is your screen, this is how we divided it and you will like it. Sad.

5. It tries to force you to Google at every option. So reluctantly I tried to link my Google on the screen, via phone, etc. 20 attempts (different wifi connections, etc.) - it will not connect (failure errors) so no new apps. Android Auto means you have maps and Pandora, that is it. And you've got to dig into the menu because Maps mute (phone or truck screen) doesn't actually mute navigation, you have to deactivate any notifications which then kills other Google Assistant features.

6. Want a text message read aloud? Good luck - usually it says can't connect. Until 4 minutes later when it then proceeds to read you something like a voicemail. "You have a new message from yada yada yada...". You get an extra 15 seconds of information you already acknowledged on the screen read aloud in computer voice. Oh and I hope it doesn't have an attachment because it will read the entire background filename as well. We died laughing as this joke GM tech read a picture text .jpg in numerical format starting at 9 QUADRILLION down to the last digit. 2 minutes easy. Even threw in the " dot j p g" at the end. Simply embarrassing GM! On screen notifications stay there until the screen is touched. Read a message, mutes your radio (obviously) but it doesn't return after reading the message. You have to hit the steering wheel mute twice to get the radio to return - this is true of any option that uses the vehicle speakers (bluetooth, voice command, etc.).
You are spot on with your rant. I have had my 2024 Duramax 2500AT4 for 3.5 months, and 6 weeks of them in the shop for repairs. I really wanted to like this truck but listening to you made me realize that is a lost cause.

I don't have an android phone but my Iphone works flawlessly with the so called horrible system,
Brakes are fantastic
steering is awesome, great feel of the road and plenty of assist going slow
Super quiet inside the cab and not a squeak even on bumpy roads
Camera system is top notch
Fit and finish of body panels in spot on
Duramax is a beast, quiet and powerful.
Transmission shifts so seamlessly you don't even notice.
bed and mirror night lighting is great
I love how stiff the ride is straight from the factory and going 90 feels like your going 50.
Only been back to the dealer for the free first oil change.
And the mirrors are great for navigating this beast around, Got a good laugh on the post about shaking uncontrollably.

I just drove mine home 400 miles. I literally found nothing in this post to be true in my experience though I could see how the column shifter could be an annoyance.

One issue did occur, I lost all sound. Chimes, blinkers, stereo, iphone etc. Got home and did a simple reset and boom fixed.

This is what I’m worried about

I wouldnt worry. I read this post a day or two before I picked up my AT4. On the 400 mile ride I saw only one thing the OP talked about and that was the shifter. I am 6'3" and for me its not that big of a deal. I can't imagine ranting about it even if I were 5'4"

I’m not a fan of the DEF garbage but I won’t be towing so I guess it’s really negligible. Hard to find a vehicle with almost 1000ft lbs of torque and probably will get more MPG then my hemi lol. As for the column shifter I’m hoping after market companies can some how fix this. I’ll have to take it out for a test drive and adjust the steering wheel and chair to see if it’s that bad. Being almost 6ft I don’t think it should be a problem.

...listening to one person who joined the forum just to post gripes, and concluding that a truck, which the vast majority of owner love and have no significant problems with, is a lost cause... This time I'm serious. You should own a Ridgeline.

DON'T be worried about it. The people complaining like that are a tiny minority. Keep in mind these forums are a funnel for complaints. If you read 10 complaints a day here, that probably represents < 0.001% of the AT4 owning population who are completely satisfied.

That shifter position is an annoyance, but if you just drop it to L10, it's out of the way, and exactly the same as having the truck in drive.

Yeah I doubt the truck will be using lots of DEF if it’s just regular driving so yeah it should be a concern. As for the column shifter like I said it shouldn’t be big deal if adjusted

Dude, why would I join an AT4 forum until I had an AT4? Forums are indeed a conduit for complaints. If you have one and love yours move along. I didn't make you read this nor defend GMC. Unless you sell the trucks and your income is based on convincing people to buy one, why does my random yet specific and detailed post even warrant your response? Much less to tell me I need a Ridgeline? Unless you daily drive a Subaru, in which case I get it.

I stand by 100% of what I said. It is a brilliant vehicle to tow. It looks amazing. It rides well from a seat and cruise perspective.

But GMC absolutely crapped the bed in the integration of the technology. They slapped a big screen up and applied Android 10 just to stay relevant. A $90k+ truck without a glovebox light? With no interior ambient lighting? With the inability to control the big screen or the display in terms of brightness at night (dim one dim all - like every knob and switch)? With 3 or 4 half baked display options only available in one color for your dash? With a big old screen and no customization? With lumbar that goes in and out but not up and down? With an analog clock used to correct for the horizontal screen display? With a tailgate that will drop during driving with ZERO visual or audible notification? With the tailgate drop selector dead center of a button cluster right above the storage cubby? With the worst most pitiful interior lighting of any vehicle I've owned? With exterior lighting options that will not turn off on lock for like 20 minutes (turn on your rear or front floods and then lock the vehicle)? With non-stop errors about a plan, most tied or pimped to Google? With a HUD that won't show you the speed limit unless you "subscribe". With a dead "cup holder" to replace a shifter change? Shifter column display block BS. With a trailer brake controller taking up literally the most valuable real estate in the console? With your primary connection ports downstream of your cup holders? With a storage tray in the armrest that prohibits using the connections in it? With power mirrors but just kidding - it is only for half of the mirrors? With amazing cameras but inability to have a turn signal visual unless you have a trailer connected? Or that constantly tell you to "clean them" and then refuse to display anything? With a parking proximity warning that has a 3 second delay? With important options stuck deep into a horrible interface? With a system that if you take a call and end it won't go back to the media (any media) you were playing without backing out and re-selecting? With fold out steps that are halfway under the vehicle? With constant chimes and no way to correct them? Why do I need 6 chimes when I start the truck?

The truck is great and absurd at the same time. The more I drive it the more I accept that. If they applied 10% of the effort to the user interface (interior) as they applied to the appearance it would be the best truck I've ever owned. Right now it is not even close.

If the vast majority of owners love it, great! No impact to me one way or the other. I'm here saying all this because my wife could GAF less.

Merry Christmas.

Coffeeman76 wears silk panties. Should probababy state your age when posting. That would help the rest of us filter relevent content or not. It is an HD truck. Who the F@ck cares. Use it for what it was intended.

I'm 47. 5 kids. Business owner with a fleet of over 100 trucks. Obviously you care. Enough to insult me about my own opinions on a truck I paid cash for. But I digress...

EDIT. Be better by example.
