2024 2500 AT4 - Issues (1 month in review)

Yeah, it must be some sort of malfunction. I just drove around the neighborhood trying it out. My tailgate would not drop unless I'm in park.

Are you just assuming you hit the button? I'm wondering if something entirely different may be causing it. Mechanical or some bizarre electronic problem sending the signal???
I know for a fact that the tailgate has dropped down while driving, because I tried it a few months ago. Was going about 25 and hit the button, and the tailgate dropped down. But then yesterday I tried the same thing and the tailgate did not drop down. Scratching my head on why it did it before (I tested it while driving several times), but yesterday it didn't.

I have a couple other newer issues. My rear mirror camera is now not working at all. It was off and on starting last friday, but as of yesterday does not work at all. Dunno why, but a trip to the dealer is in order.

Also, my kicker multi-gate bluetooth system is no longer working. Hasn't been working for a few weeks. It just doesn't turn on. I rarely use it, but a few weeks ago when I did try to use it, it was dead. I have google searched for fixes, tried those fixes to no avail. So add that to the list of what the dealer will need to check out/fix when I get a chance to take it in. 12,500 miles on the truck and it's 6 months old, so warranty damn well better cover these things.

Ugh. That kind of stuff makes me want to go back to my ‘75 chevy Scottsdale.

I don't have an AT4 HD, but a 23 AT4X. Some of these issues I have noticed also. The "tailgate down" button right where you accidentally hit it all the time. Just a disaster waiting to happen for those of us that pull trailers, or have stuff in the back of the truck (I am a contractor) that will fall out while driving. Why in the hell would the tailgate go down while driving anyway? I got the GM box web thing simply because I can't risk losing thousands of dollars of tools out of the back of my truck in case the tailgate down button is accidentally hit.

The operating system is a bit slow. I blame GM for using outdated OS and not an optimized OS. Android is fine, but you can't be running 4 year old OS stuff. Plus you need to have a good enough mobile processor/ram/etc to not be laggy, and I don't believe that GM is using stout enough processor/ram/etc. I have a carplay box (usb-C in as an apple airplay but runs full Android) as my full time operating system for most things. Yes, even this is a little laggy/slow, but it gives me tons of more options - full android and any android app can be installed and used as normal - to be able to use the big display for. I do wish one could maximize the display and get rid of the right 3rd being a clock or smaller nav maps. However, I use Nav a lot to get to different/new jobsites, so I utilize the right 3rd as my Nav map quite often. Not a huge issue or deal for me, but would still like to be able to maximize the main screen for the full display if I wanted.

Starting this past friday, my rear camera mirror started glitching. Half the time it works, half the time now it doesn't. I suppose I will have to take it in the GM if it keeps doing this. Plus, the night time view on my 23 AT4X rear view camera mirror is not nearly as good as it was on my 2020 AT4. Odd.

There are other things I am not very fond of, but overall this is a very nice truck. No manufacturer makes a perfect vehicle, and I still like the looks of the GM/GMC's better than other brands. All of them can be made to look very nice with wheels/tires/lift or level/etc. But still like the GM styling the best, been that way since the 2008 GM body style became available.

I agree, mine is quick but so painfully restricted in arrangement and content - not to mention I still can't actually do any sort of login that it makes me want to scream. And at least once every 30 minutes I get the "Google Speech while driving" error on the screen. I mean Android Auto isn't the best anyways, for sure but given the size of this vehicle the ability to install a decent current year processor, RAM and storage should have been a piece of cake. The fact it can't really even hang with my 2 year old Galaxy is pitiful considering the room for it. My phone (again 2 years old) is running Android v13 - why does a 2024 come with a stripped v10? I agree on the OS, but there are so many pretty slick OS systems that are on phones and tablets they could have adopted and modified one of those I would think. Again, fingers crossed for a good number of updates.

Mind if I ask which box you are using? I will probably do the same.

Thanks, and sorry for all my bi%^hing - I agree the looks are hard to beat and it does ride like a dream for a 2500 truck.

I just traded a 2019 Ram 1500 for a 23 AT4 HD. There are so many things that were standard on a Ram Laramie that aren't included in preferred At4 package. Honestly, I need the 2500 and Ram didn't have a gasser anywhere near me. I figured what the hell! Other than Android Auto, this truck has less tech and options than my 2014 Ram 2500 did. And it really is 1st world problems. Sunroof: you cant go from open to tilt and vice versa. You have to close whatever option you are using then press other option. In the Ram just press the button you want. Auto sensing wipers on every Ram I have owned since it was an option. Only in the Premium package on the GMC. I do like my truck. I absolutely loved my 2014 Ram 2500 and the 2019 1500 was my favorite truck ever.

My 2019 Ram Limited was a dream. I fell in love with it the moment I got in it and after test driving all the other brands. They absolutely set the bar and everyone else has played catch up. Before that I had been in Chevy/GMC for at least 15 years. I just wish Ram had done some sort - any sort - of real refresh since then. I couldn't justify the price or towing capacity of the 2023 1500 Limited knowing what I got my 2019 for and basically going back into the exact same vehicle. Nor the insane price of the 2500 which I honestly don't love from a looks standpoint. I do miss my dang Rambox though, lord I forgot how much stuff I carried in there.

But the tech was spot on. It didn't rely on Google (or force Google) for everything, it was made for the truck (so it seemed anyways). Ability to change colors and "moods". Re-tile your screen. Split screens. Station display and album cover options and on the dash. Large crisp station buttons with the station Logo/Graphics. Large easy source selector (or tones, audio settings, categories, etc. without going to a separate crappy OS screen). Almost zero wasted screen display space. Not being forced to have 1/3 of your screen be a red analog clock or giant Google pop up.

Yup. Rain sense selector. Sunroom from any position (not to mention a giant sunroof). Fog lights on stayed on after restart if selected. Physical buttons where you didn't stab them by mistake all the time. No gear shift blocking half the screen, 2 radio stations, 2 camera selections, menus, etc. Nice large physical knobs (not a 1/2" mini knob hidden by the shifter). An actual 12v port (I know I'm old school). Dual (vs 1) USB and USB-C options that weren't in the 100% spill zone right beside the cupholders. A 115 outlet you could use with the storage tray in place. Trailer brake controller close enough to use but not taking up prime real estate. Ability to tone down an air vent vs. simply redirecting it until it closes. An upper glove box you could actually reach.

Wireless charger was finicky as hell and I lost more crap in that deep sliding storage area that I had to dig for or ran over with the sliding cup holders then I care to count but I do miss that truck (if you couldn't tell haha). I would have traded the fancy LED startup lightshow on the AT4 for an OS and user interface that seems like someone at GMC forgot to even test.

You did get rid of those goofy ass mirrors that seem all dodge owners need to extend all the way out, bobtailing! 😁

I do think the issue is primarily that GM did not put a high end processor or enough RAM in these systems. IDK what they have for a mobile processor and RAM, but guaranteed it is not nearly as stout as my current phone, Galaxy S22 Ultra. Probably would be lucky if it is 20% as powerful as my phone.

Then to use a very old version of the OS - just asking for issues.

All that being said, I don't have a ton of complaints with it. It could be a bit snappier, but overall it is a nice system.

Here is the carplay product I bought off of Amazon. I paid $200 in February, it is now $172, so it has dropped in price. I really like it. I use it as my default in place of the factory system. It is running full Android, so whatever you could do with a tablet, you can do with this.

Hopefully this link to the Amazon product works:

I have found nothing the first post said is true. You would have to be a midget if the column shifter was anywhere near your view.

Just another GM bash thread. Bottom line its a bad-ass truck and 20 years from now you will still see these on the road and you will never see a 2023 RAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is literally the topic of numerous threads on this very forum.

Guess the midgets are out in force.

Plus I could care less about 20 years from now. Focusing on the POS I'm currently driving.

I agree that the shifter lever in the Drive position interferes with the volume knob, finding and using the bottom left side icons.

It not an excuse for a bad design, but gm did give you volume controls on the backside of the steering wheel.

Sounds like you didn't research or test drive the vehicle, sell the POS and stop complaining about your poor decisions to people who happen to like the trucks.

I've only had my 2024 HD AT4 for three days. I see some of the things in the OP's post that can be aggravating. I find my tailgate open when I didn't expect it to be, don't know why yet, but I'll figure it out. Android Auto seems to default to open when I start the truck, pretty sure I selected that when I set everything up, just need to figure out how to reverse it. The shift lever isn't any different than me moving my head for the mirrors. Overall I bought the truck to tow my travel trailer and the Duramax Diesel will do it effortlessly. I guess being retired allows me to see things more calmly.

Figured I'd give an update now after a few more months and 7500 miles. Plus I can tell Stuart loves the posts so need to keep everyone happy.

Tailgate is a major issue. I can't tell for certain if it has dropped while driving or me tossing something in the storage area while parked, getting gas, etc but 3 times now a passerby has flagged me down to tell me. Almost lost a few grand in tools one time. I've gotten zero audible or visual warning that the tailgate was down while driving. I've gotten to the point I always kick it in reverse to start so I get a camera check.

As I mentioned I bricked the Android Auto Google sponsored BS in the truck. First update of course it was all back active as ever so I did it again. I purchased an Android 13 box that is 100 times better. I pull the shifter to manual and click her to 10 to avoid the interference.

Since the update, when I pull in and park, turn off the truck the dash and center screen and radio all remain on. Even after locking it. They do cut off after a few minutes but there is my truck jamming music in the grocery store parking lot. What is that all about? If you are on a call the only way to get it off is to kill your bluetooth.

Even though the Android Auto is basically dead the truck forces you to connect to the GMC wifi. Click disconnect. It will reconnect 100 times in a row. I had to use my phone to force ignore the damn thing. Same thing happens with the item above. Get home, walk in and for 10 minutes or whatever your phone is force connected to GMC. All while the truck is off and locked in the driveway.

Of course the random stuff - absolutely will not connect via Bluetooth for a conference style meeting (Teams, Zoom, etc.) So aggravating since I average 3 or 4 of those a day. Phone connects to a basic bluetooth speaker and works for those, not sure why it won't on the truck.

On mine if you change sources and come back to XM you have to change the channel then back again to get any tunes. The one channel is force muted. Dumb.

If you come out of your driveway at night and go slow, the auto lights won't activate (min. 25mph). Click on the high beams to avoid the deer in the hood and then the auto high/low will not function until you shut off the vehicle.

Nit picking but lord I wish you could change the auto lock timer. I have it on because of items in the vehicle but you turn around for just a few seconds and she locks. 20 or 30 seconds would be great. I think set at 10 seconds tops, feels like 5.

I've still got major noise and squeals at turning, especially full turn. Dealer looking at it (again).

If you turn on the mirror flood lights (forward or rear) then lock the truck the rest of the lights cut off except those. I haven't tested if they stay on forever but you've got to open the door, fish around and turn them off in the dark because of course they aren't backlit or anything.

Went to grab an oil change and of course GM hasn't pushed out anything on the 2024 so no place - not any major service center will touch it. Only place you can go is the dealer - of course. Both dealers near me were "bring it in and drop it off". For an oil change. Really?

Both driver and pass large (top) mirrors shake like the devil. To the point it is annoying and distracting. Tinting my windows helped and I've learned to not focus on it but damn it will scatter your brain if you do.

Onto the good stuff.

She rides like a dream. Very comfortable for extended trips. Easy cruiser, probably the most comfortable easy driving vehicle I've ever owned.

She tows very well as advertised.

Although only 7500 miles I am pleasantly surprised and the fuel mileage I'm getting. Much better than the RAM and a much bigger vehicle.

Lastly, Stuart - I am far from a GM hater. I've had many GM vehicles of the years. The RAM was the first non-GM branded vehicle I've had in 20 years or more. These are real issues. Some significant, some minor, some personal. But this is an AT4 forum and in my opinion, even as good as you think the vehicle is, I think for the money GM could have done better. Especially with simple things. Software. Tailgate. Shift lever. Anyways, I'm glad you like yours. I like mine, looks great, rides awesome - but I wanted to love it. And I simply don't.

What Android 13 box do you have? I bought a $200 Android box (connects as an apple carplay but runs full android) on Amazon, and am very happy with it. It is my default main screen on the infotainment system. It takes a little bit to connect, sometimes faster than others, and it is not nearly as fast as my phone (Galaxy S22 Ultra), but overall it works well. It even has better audio (for some reason) - more clear and crisp - from my phone via bluetooth than the stock GM system has. No idea why, but I will take it. Plus, it is really nice to have full Android to install literally any app and run it on the infotainment system. Recently, the only app that will no longer install/run is Disneyplus. Kinda sucks but not the end of the world.

Anyway, interested what Android box you have, how much you paid, and where you got it.

Haha I won't know what I am missing in my new AT4. I am coming from a 2009 Nissan Titan. Still I wish I hadn't of read this. I ended up with an AT4 for a couple reasons.

1. I love functional beds/ tailgates. That tailgate is something I would use. (This is why I bought the Titan, the functionality of the bed)
2. Best looking HD truck by far. I never liked Rams or their interiors. I liked the Fords ok up until the new one, I hate the rounded off look.
3. The shocks would have been my first upgrade, and the AT4 has them already.
4. I like the interior redesign.
5. The duramax just keeps getting better
6. Almost forgot- Independent front Suspension For me, this truck will be 90 percent play and 10 percent work. I won't be beating the heck out of it.
7 Best camera system- My wife and I will be doing a little off road exploring and there are times when she will take the camper and truck on her own....a good camera system will make her feel more comfortable.
