My Baby was Stolen!!!!

I've never liked OnStar and went with a 3rd party company called GoTrack for my GPS tracker. Super simple install and I get text alerts for First Movement, movement outside of my geofence, and I set their Working Hours to the midnight hours so I get a text for anything after 10PM through 6AM. Might be overkill but this thing reports every minute and gives me a breadcrumb trail so I know where the truck is and where it has been. I have it zip-tied up under the dash panel so it will buy me some time before they really rip it apart!

Hope you find your truck though. That sucks no matter what it is. I had an old Willy's Jeep stolen years ago and decided to get these GPS trackers after. I have them on our vehicles, 2 boats, and side by side.
I presume these still rely on cell phone signals; pretty useless if in the boondocks where theres none I imagine.

They use AT&T which has great service even in the sticks of MO.
Ideally a satellite tracking device is best since its not relying on cell phone signals. We travel across to Canada a lot, often into areas with zero cellphone connectivity and use a Garmin InReach for emergency texting; there is a fee for an associated plan but its ok.

Regarding insurance, which of the vehicle isn’t recovered by Monday, will call it a total loss. Then they have 72 hrs to do a valuation of the vehicle and offer a cash value assessment report. The thing I’m most worried about is that there really aren’t that many comparable vehicles to mine in Texas or anywhere ) If possible please chime in if your truck has any of these original features…

Won't your ins co go off of your vin for valuation? You paid a ins premium based off your vin, no?

I know States differ, but to value a vehicle based on conditions of "like" vehicles is ass-backwards to me.

Good luck

Don’t have personal experience (found him after the fact) but look up Collision Safety Consultants. Billy is out of NC but has offices all over. He is on FB that is where i follow his company. He is a flat fee for diminished value or total loss. He will do the leg work and fight your insurance company.

Dang. That sucks.

I bought my truck last Tuesday, and someone tried stealing it on Friday. I got the OnStar text alert when eating dinner. It was daylight and in a public lot just outside the restaurant. I walked out and didn’t see anyone, so I guess they ran as soon as the alarm went off.

Bought an airtag, removed the speaker, and hid in the vehicle. If it gets stolen oh well, but curious if this AirTag hack works. Even if they get notified, good luck finding it.

AirTag wont work, anyone with an iPhone can find it.
Same with Tags/Tiles for Android phones.
There are rechargeable GPS magnetic trackers you can stick under the truck on the frame somewhere, requires a GPS subscription (can find the trackers on amazon) and you can setup geofencing, etc.

There are kill switches like:
  • IGLA - most expensive, remote start still intact, some cool videos on it for GM trucks on youtube
  • Ravelco
  • Mobilistics NoStart - cheapest option, no splicing of wires, just a Fuel Pump Relay kill switch

And if you want to go to the extreme so that it will be hard to pull the ECM module out, hehe https://croclocecm.com/

I thought about a gps tracker, but the pain of recharging it every week or two and subscription weren’t worth it to me. If it gets stolen, oh well, I’ll deal with insurance.

As far as the AirTag, as far as I understand, the notification isn’t immediate, it doesn’t notify the user right away. Without the speaker it will be tough to find as it won’t make a sound, but not impossible.

Dang, you had a carbon bed!!!
Yea, my dream truck is gone… will be posting a thread to say adios to the GMC family…luckily insurance valued it fairly… oh and just as a PSA, if y’all have a carfax account etc, check it routinely, apparently title fraud is happening too, caught it too late, but after your truck is stolen you tend to try to be obsessive. Cont…

About 2 months before it was taken, I got an email from carfax saying thanks for getting it serviced at Walmart auto center (I didn’t, and not my first choice for mechanical maintenance) in another state!!. Thought they probably just typed in the wrong VIN or something.. then looked at the service record while dealing with the theft… the MFr’s went to that states DMV and registered it there, then went to TX DMV to I dunno, confirm transfer’!! Cont.

They said they lost the title and requested a brown copy (all this from the detective working my case) and said, oh but I moved etc register it in —- state. So my truck had its identity stolen, they put the vin on a different stolen truck and fudge paperwork to make it legit. Detective said he’d never gotten so much information from the victim of an auto theft. Well I’m not missing a $9k Hyundai! Anyways they’re trying to track them down but for me the truck is long gone and I’m just waiting to get payment from the insurance. Cont.
