Carbyte (DFM disabler for 2024) limited giveaway

Thank you all for the excellent feedback. I will post a detailed response and the action plan later today. In the meantime, a question for the folks who reported hard downshifting: does it also happen when you put the truck in L9 (without the Carbyte unit plugged in)?

I'll give this a try on my drive home this afternoon.

I will say, the hard downshift I was noticing (or think I was noticing) has really smoothed out after driving around yesterday and today.

That's great news! Regarding the parameter monitoring capabilities, are there specific parameters you'd like to see? Have you had a chance to use the OBDLink app with your Carbyte device?

Actually didn't download the OBDLink app, only the Carbyte app. I see now that the OBDLink app is where I can see the parameter monitoring.

So, with the downshifting to seem to have resolved, and the discovery of the parameter monitoring in the OBDLink app, both of the negatives I listed in my initial review are now resolved.

As for other parameters I'd like to see - I'd like to be able to see the gear the truck is in, as well as, something showing the DFM isn't kicking in. On my previous truck (2013 Silverado) I could see the truck was staying in V8 on the DIC when I was using the Range Technology device.

Man I've been lurking a while and found out about Carbyte from the forum a couple weeks ago. This is a pretty cool offer.

Is there any way with Carbyte to tell if DFM is off besides feel?
Is it supposed to turn off the piano light on the Auto Start/Stop?
Can it read and clear codes like an ODB Reader?

Had a chance to give the OBDLink a quick glance.

Set-up was a bit confusing because the Carbyte device is not specifically mentioned in the Connection Wizard within the OBDLink app. I did get it set-up by selecting the OBDLink CX device in the Connection Wizard.

Thank you, this is super useful feedback. DFM disable counter is on the development roadmap. We're also in the process of adding Carbyte to the Connection Wizard in the OBDLink app. Can you elaborate on why you want to see what gear the truck is in?

Welcome.

Honestly, I have no real answer for seeing what gear the truck is in besides curiosity.

I would rank being able to confirm the truck stays in V8 higher than being able to see the gear.

Knowing your gear is very helpful while off-roading, and while towing. So being able to see what gear your in can help you know that you need to gear down or up for your needs.

Whooooo! Thank you Carbyte for allowing me to be a participant in this study. Product arrived while at work today. I will plug it in this afternoon/evening and go for a ride. More to follow

I too would like to know if this device will effect warranty. Will the dealership be able to see that this device was plugged in? Will they be able to see that the DFM and auto start/stop was turned off? Obviously I will unplug when I take it in for service.

Thank you again for taking the time to write about your experience with Carbyte and giving us specific and actionable feedback. As promised, here are the answers to your questions and our plans for addressing the issues:

QR code in the Quick Start Guide not working for Android
Fixed. The same QR code is supposed to automatically take you to the correct app store (Google Play or Apple) based on the phone’s operating system (Android or iOS). There was a problem with the link that we fixed this afternoon. When you get a chance, please try scanning the QR code again and let me know what happens.

Hard downshift
When Carbyte disables DFM, the engine and transmission ECUs needs some time to learn how to operate under the new conditions. The duration of the relearn process varies from vehicle to vehicle and also depends on the type of driving. To speed up the learning process, strive for a good mix of speeds and rates of acceleration/deceleration. Once the relearn process is complete, shifting should become smooth again.

Carbyte fails to sync
This problem is likely caused by connecting to the Carbyte device from the app before it had a chance to sync with the truck. Plug in Carbyte, start the engine, and let the device sync with the vehicle before trying to connect to it from the app.

“This vehicle is not compatible with Carbyte” error message
There’s an error in the code logic. We will get it fixed in the next app update.

Diagnostics & Live Parameter monitoring
Carbyte app can read and clear DTCs, but does not yet support live parameter monitoring in the app. However, you can use the OBDLink app to monitor OBDII parameters. The next OBDLink app update will have Carbyte in the Connection Wizard.

Dealer warranty
Carbyte does not make any changes to the ECU software, and everything reverts back to default once you unplug it. It does not impact factory warranty. However, we recommend unplugging Carbyte before taking it to the dealer.

Indicator LED operation and meaning
At present, this is the meaning of the different LED states:

Status (green)
  • OFF: no power at the OBD connector (check fuse)
  • ON: power on, syncing with the vehicle
  • Slow blink: synced with the vehicle
  • Fast blink: sync error
OBD
  • Flashes to indicate OBD activity
LNK
  • Fast blink: pairing mode (discoverable by app)
  • Slow blink: paired, waiting for connection from the app
  • ON: connected
  • ON, blinking OFF: exchanging messages with the app

We plan on changing the meaning of the LED flashing patterns to make them more intuitive. I will post an update when it happens.

On my drive home this evening, I noticed the hard downshift is almost completely gone. I have to really pay close attention to notice anything now. If I feel anything now, I would describe it as a little jump - kinda like I just pulled off the brake while stopping - but it’s very subtle and not every time I’m stopping now.

Also wanted to say - when I connected the OBDLink app this evening, it told me it needed to update the firmware. Performed the firmware update and it took maybe one minute. Very simple.

The OBDLink is really nice. I like how customizable it is.

Plugged in Carbyte this evening and could not get it to sync until I updated firmware. Once done went on a stop and go dive through the city then about 10 miles round trip along a country highway. I love my AT4 again. No engine start stop, better throttle response and smooth consistency in engine performance vs when cylinders would be active/inactive.

Can Carbyte work on a way to remove or raise the speed limiter of 97mph? The 6.2 should be allowed to run off leash when needed.

Will test freeway speeds for several miles to work and home again tomorrow20241028_173526.jpg20241028_173611.jpg. Thank you!
