Chip Shortage Forces GM To Cut Production At Silverado, Sierra Truck Plant
Auto experts don't expect chip supply levels to return to normal until at least 2023.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but there was a gm authority article awhile back stating all crew cab 1500 sierra’s were built in Silao Mexico, and regular cab and double cabs were built in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Beings all refreshed AT4’s are only crew cabs, Fort Wayne’s shutdown might not affect us if that statement is true. But likely semiconductor shortages are chain wide.Anyone know the details on the factory closing down? I'm wondering if it'll affect my truck.
I really hope this is true and my truck gets built soon. I got a shaky foot already!Correct me if I’m wrong, but there was a gm authority article awhile back stating all crew cab 1500 sierra’s were built in Silao Mexico, and regular cab and double cabs were built in Fort Wayne, Indiana. I had a reservation in with a dealer about 40 minutes away. Within a week they called about what I wanted. I told them some very basic info, not enough to actually put in an order so I got suspicious. He didn't want to know anything beyond trim, engine, and box/bed. He told me orders picked up by the original reservation holder would be sold at MSRP. Any order that was not finalized by the reservation holder would be sold at market whatever it was at that time... So I put two and two together and figured they weren't ever going to put an order in for me because they don't actually want to sell any of these trucks for MSRP. He would pretend he didn't know I was trying to get the refreshed AT4 and emailed or called me about half a dozen times trying to sell me a 21 or a 22 limited that was enroute. I got sick of his games.I placed my reservation through gmc.com on 1/31/22 but have yet to hear from my dealer or gmc regarding building out my truck. Is this a typical wait time for everyone?
How much communication have you had with your salesman? I ordered about a week after you. He said I would be hearing from him every couple of weeks. I reached out to him last Friday about something and he answered my question but hasn't sent me any updates regarding my order.I called Laura GMC in St. Louis at the very end of February and placed an order with the salesman. It was just built this week. You have to be proactive
The truck is in Transit via rail to Port Allen, LA. It is expected to be at the dealership soon. The dealership will get a 48 hr notice prior to ETA at dealership.Shank, any updates??
I checked mine on Tuesday, and I had 3300, just checked now and I still have 3300. So unlike me you're right on with timing. TPW 3/28 doesn't mean they start building the truck, its the process that starts (paperwork, inventory needed for production, mounting whatever the heck has to be mounted to the machines, etc.). When my dealer told me I had a TPW of 3/28 they said that meant that it would be actually produced on the first week of April. Which is this upcoming Monday, but my truck isn't moving from 3300 for some reason.I’ve been checking everyday with my TPW of 3/28 with no change so far. Still at 3400.
I might be wrong, but my understanding is if your TPW was 3/21 then that's when your truck was being prepared, which is 3300, so the next week (3/28) is when they actually start producing it which is 3400. Which means your next step is 3450 which means your car is done being built, and is sitting somewhere in the plant (most likely in Mexico). My TPW was 3/21 and I am still at 3400. Not sure what to make of it.
I was thinking they actually started producing it the week of 3/21. So hopefully 3450 next weekI might be wrong, but my understanding is if your TPW was 3/21 then that's when your truck was being prepared, which is 3300, so the next week (3/28) is when they actually start producing it which is 3400.
