Tail gate mishap

Different circumstances, but I have a nice deep dent in mine as of last week.

Dented my tailgate yesterday  One of my motorcycles had a flat rear tire so I put my Nomar tire changer in the receiver hitch of the truck. I used to have this thing floor mounted to the floor when I had a shop but the new house has no shop and I never mounted this thing in the garage floor due to the slab being a post tension design. Well I was breaking the bead on the tire which was not wanting to break down and at some point the wheel shifted and the lever arm on the bead breaker slammed right into my tailgate and dent and slight scratch was the result. I knew better since this had once happened on my old HD truck and it hit the painted bumper on that truck which was a scratch but no dent. Oh I was livid at this point yesterday. The dent is off to the side of the tailgate and noticeable. PDR can probably remove the dent but the scratch is finger nail deep but not to the primer or bare metal. it is about 1" long. When it rains it pours here....
Don’t feel bad. I did almost the same thing TWICE. The first time was when I closed the garage door, and my truck was not in all the way. The door scraped down the tailgate about 4”. It cost me $400 to get it repaired.

The second time was when I opened that stupid multi-pro tailgate then opened the step which landed on my trailer hitch. It left a small dimple that I covered with a flag decal. Man was I ever pissed. That was only the second time I’ve lowered the step since I’ve owned the truck. I hate that tailgate, it’s just too damn heavy. Boy, what a knucklehead I am !!!

Is there a way to lock the tailgate and keep it locked on these trucks? My 2015 Sierra is the last year before power tailgate lock and I thought it had missed out on that but when I have a trailer with trailer jack attached I lock the tailgate with a key so it cannot be dropped by me or anyone else onto the jack. I know the multi pro tailgate will hit any tow bar in the receiver so there should be a way to lock out that function to prevent accidental opening.

I feel the same way about the tailgate for all of its good it does have many things I do not like and yes the weight of the thing is one.

If it is a way I have not found it yet. I am not so worried about what I may do as others who are simply trying to help out and do not understand this thing is a denting time bomb at the push of a button.

ouch! that is way worse than mine. I can't get mine to really show in a picture but I can see it clearly in the daylight with my eyes.

So I took the cover off to see if it was possible for a PDR guy to even get to the dent being it so close to edge of the tail gate. Looks like it would be nearly impossible to get at it. I could not even see through a few openings to even get a clear view of the dent. Unfortunately it is close to where a sheet metal sandwich comes to it on the inside of the tail gate. Lucky me I guess. So I am trying to just put it out of my mind since it probably won't be the last time this thing gets hit due to the design. Sad that I managed to do it in the garage and have not drove the thing in 3 weeks and it only has 2600 miles on it after owning it 4 months. I do question at times why I even need a truck to begin with.

Thats exactly why I lock my tailgate and I am at that point happy I DONT have power tailgate lock. It will stay locked for the weekend regardless of how many times the vehicle has been driven/locked/unlocked and no one can drop the tailgate on the trailer jack.

Well, the "Dent Master" could prolly get at mine, but I just put a flag decal over it and tried to fuhgeddaboudit!!! You're right, the weight of the tailgate is terrible. I've had my truck for 15 months and have a whopping 5000 miles on it.

I bought this hitch ball, as long as I don't open it when the ball is out I'm good to go. AT4 HD

B&W tow and stow

Yep. That thing works well. If you have it in the un-stowed position in the second hole down, you can drop the gate and also the mid gate using the 2" ball. And also if the balls are horizontal.

There is only a .250" of clearance with the 2 5/16" ball and I don't trust my weight climbing up into the bed with it vertical.

I must be one of the few that love this gate. Damn truck is so high and I'm not getting any younger. I bet it gets used 8 times a day on the farm.

Only time I stow it is when I pull a clevis trailer. I adjusted my trailers to level out loaded on the second hole down.

On a side note...I bet I've gained 5lbs not having to get in and out of the truck 20 times to hook a trailer up using the hitch camera!

Hooking up the goosenecks is still a pain with a crossover toolbox. They block the bed ball from view. Bed camera wooks well for 5th wheels.
