Infotainment Differences among GM's?

I can’t seem to use the Hot spot without the OnStar data plan nor will the Infotainment system recognize my home WiFi in the driveway even though my IPhone is connected. I guess I don’t understand why the Infotainment system works with Android / IPhone via Bluetooth but doesn’t recognize a WiFi source?
You need to go into the system settings, then wifi networks and setup from there.

You can use the wifi Hotspot from your phone or any other wifi network within distance.

This is from a pre-re, you'll need to adjust for a refreshed...

I feel Bayoucountrygal is referring to a phone Hotspot, not the Infotainment system Hotspot which may need Onstar data.
Yes I was referring to phoe hot spot. I do apologize for not making it clear. Had a brain glitch lol. But I do not have onstar and not sure I want to get that. But im still debating about it. It would be cheaper to add unlimited Hotspot to my data plan I think, and have the truck connected to my phone. Only issue there is that it keeps dropping the phone connection. And android has been making changes that im not liking as is the apple phone. Both would drop connection to the truck infotainment system. Dang if I do and dang if I dont. I like technology but here lately I'm wondering if its best to forgo technology and go back to old school for some things.

Phone/Data Carrier signals vary by carriers for a specific location and several are offering plans which also provide satellite reception in their plans which work in some remote areas (not all). Technology has come a long way from medium, long and shortwave radio, however, end of the day, current phone/data technologies rely on a line of sight signal whether its from a cell phone tower or satellite, and nothing is perfect or will ever be 100% perfect.

Gemarsh to the rescue again. I was able to connect to my home WiFi as you suggested. Signed in to Google and downloaded the offline maps. Now I need to figure out how to get myGMC app to stop requiring OnStar services…..

Infotainment Status update:
Connections: Home WiFi
iPhone - CarPlay via Bluetooth
iPhone - WiFi via Hotspot

HUD now shows turn by turn in Apple Maps & both turn by turn and speed limit in Google Maps
Google Assistant works (sometimes) with WiFi
My GMC has the owners manual

So the major item I can’t figure out is GMC software updates? Am I missing anything else?
