I have a motorhome with a Cummins ISL 450 HP and 1250 pounds of torque. Many said, especially old farmers, you don't need any additives as the diesel engine manufacturers didn't recommend any. Well.... a few years back, Cummins started recommending an engine additive to increase lubricity.
One of the reasons for the recommendation was a test done by Diesel Magazine who tested diesel fuel throughout the U.S. They found that some fuel did not meet the U.S. Government standards for lubricity. It wasn't a widespread issue but enough for Cummins to recommend an additive. To be fair, the additive they recommended was their own brand.
Testing of the additives revealed that Diesel Kleen was good, but one of the best was OptiLube. I use the Summer Blend in my motorhome. I think the ratio is 1 ounce to 10 gallons. I keep small bottles in my storage bay and fill at each fill-up. It's a little easier with the motorhome as you're not fueling it as often as a truck.
I don't run any additives for my gas 6.2L, other than a rosary across the valve covers hoping it doesn't blow.
