Different interiors in trim levels on HD, some dont block the screen.

Same for me. I had only had a center console shifter on a 2013 Ram I had for a year, all my other trucks had always had a column shifter. Orginally didn't think I'd like the console shifter on the RAM, but ended up liking it. My 2020 AT4 had the column shifter and I was fine with it, but my 23 AT4X has the console shifter and I like prefer it over column at this poiint. I personally don't want to go back to a column shifter if I had my preference, but it is not a deal breaker either way for me whenever I trade for a new truck down the line (probably about 3 years from now).
I agree with you. I would not want to go back to a column shifter and I seriously dislike the shifter buttons/pull switches on my wife's '23 Z71 Tahoe. At the same time, if my next truck had the column shifter I could make due as well.

For me it is electronic vs mechanical. I don’t want an electronic shifter in my truck. The column shift in the new truck works for me, but just placement isn’t that critical as long as it isn’t in the way.

I understand what you are saying here. Mechanical linkage is by far much easier to address an issue with if it were to arise. Plus it's well proven and reliable.

I dont really care between column and console shifter for the act of shifting but the column shifter frees up prime real estate. Take a look at the center console/cup holders in the SLT/Chevy style interior. Makes much more sense with L/R cupholders and large storage area.
