Thanks man!
I was originally shopping for a half ton AT4 too actually. Specifically, a 6.5’ bed with the 3.0. My last several trucks have been crew cab, short bed half tons, and I was sick and tired of how short the beds are typically. (Granted, GM is more generous than Ford) I do a lot of projects around the house and have gotten interested in woodwork/building things; the shorter beds make hauling lumber a hassle. That configuration is exceptionally hard to find, and because of that, your negotiating power is somewhat limited.
While I was researching trucks, I saw the new AT4 HD and was absolutely blown away. I had never even considered a 3/4 ton, mostly because of price, but also because I don’t Need one. But damn they look good! After some research, I realized that GM has priced the half tons so high that they are now basically the same price as the HD gassers! Wow. Further, the 3/4 tons ALWAYS have a full size bed-no more endless hunting. This just keeps making more sense for me. Then, I find out that, not just the diesels, but the gas 3/4 tons, hold their value better than the 1500’s. Even better.
Obsessively watching YouTube and reading forums, I learn that it’s disturbingly common for Duramax’s (both 3.0 & 6.6) to leave people stranded with Very low mileage and for people to be truckless for months on end waiting for answers and/or parts.
I can’t stomach that.
In the 1500, that only leaves the 6.2. As awesome as that engine is, it’s plagued by lifter failures, gets less-than-stellar gas mileage, requires premium, and is also subject to the complications of AFM/DFM/whatever they’re calling cylinder deactivation now.
The 6.6 gasser has none of the problematic EPA systems from the 1500’s, none of the problematic EPA systems of the diesels, and doesn’t require premium fuel. Fuel mileage is weak, but not outrageous, and not Much worse than my previous 5.3 or a 6.2.
On top of allll that, I don’t need a 3/4 ton, I certainly don’t need a diesel 3/4 ton, I don’t need modern diesel problems, and I can’t handle modern diesel truck notes!
So I spent about the same as a new 1500 AT4 on a truck that I like more, for about $10k less than a diesel, and about $6k less than msrp when most of my local dealers were adding markups.
