Worth it? Would you do it again?

Has your AT4 3.0 needed unscheduled repairs?

I was one of the few that answered "Sure has, show knows me well", but I feel I need to explain a little. In the first few thousand miles of the truck, I have to take it in three times for CEL around emissions issues. They all turned out to be minor issues usually around a loose clamp, or sensor not being set correctly, etc. Some took minutes to diagnose and repair and others a few days. They dealer always gave me a loaner car and after the third strike got GM to give me a maintenance plan free of charge due to the inconvenience of it all. Now I get the first 6 services free.

In the end, I would 100% buy this truck again. Although the trips to the dealer were annoying the truck has performed great overall. I am now at 16k miles and have had no major issues.

About 36 hours with mine and love it so far. I WAS going to buy another Ford, 3.5 twin-turbo ecoboost (had one on our Expedition Max that we traded a few months back). But saw this 3.0 liter duramax and had to test drive it. Then drove an F-150 Tremor and the two were just not in the same league. Pricewise...yes; appointment...no. GMC AT4 just outshined the Ford in almost every aspect. However...I'm not sure I like the shocks on this puppy so far. I had the same issue with a Ford F-250 Diesel I bought some years ago; came with "Rancho" shocks. I removed them within about 1500 miles and put Bilsteins on it and it made a world of difference. Of course, three of the four "rancho" shocks I took off the truck were already dead. I need to search on here to see what the shock issue is - if any.

I don’t have the 3.0, so I cannot speak directly for it from a personal standpoint - but I’ve had my truck (6.2L) for 13 months, and just crossed over 11K miles yesterday. The only issue I’ve had with mine is the infotainment system likes to mute itself 2-3 times in the first couple minutes of turning the truck on for 1-2 seconds each time. I do want to make an appointment to have my transmission checked out, because it has started to randomly “clunk” when I put it into Park. Used to be that I’d put it into P and you couldn’t hear or feel any movement in the transmission - and my wife has a 2023 Tahoe with the same exact engine and trans, and it’s silent/motionless when going into P… but now my truck makes a noticeable noise and has a thud motion when I put it into P.

I’m on the GMC Sierra forum on Reddit all the time, and there’s a ton of 3.0 owners on there, and I’ve seen basically nothing but praise regarding that engine. I have seen a person claiming to be a GM tech say they have electrical issues because they “put 12 lbs of shit in a 5 lb bag” but it doesn’t appear to be anyone I’ve seen complaining about electrical issues.
For the audio issue, you need to tell the dealer you need them to do a software update to the version that includes a "build number" that has Y171.X in it, instead of Y165.X. See screenshot of someone posting this about their refresh chevy. This fixed my issue on my AT4!

Thanks! It’s at the dealership now for the transmission issues… so I will call them up and ask them to do that as well.

2021 AT4 - 3.0 at 68,000 miles. No issues with truck. The only thing I did was add the Bilstein 5100's to stiffen the ride up a little. I feel the Banks I-Dash is a must for these truck. It allows you to see your Re-gen status and keep up with tons of data. I have a 22' bay boat and tows it way better than the gas engines I have had. No complaints here.. and comments on Carbon Pro is correct on accessories, but they now have folding, sliding bed covers for them. Accessory selection is getting better. That is if you even if you look at that package.
Would do again....

2021 1500 AT4
Front crank seal was just replaced @ 52K
Quick turnaround from the dealer
Covered under warranty
Would buy again.

22 limited at4, just under 29,000 miles. Bought it with 9280 miles on it, no idea if it had any issues in that time but since I’ve had it the only issue I’ve had is the heater core coolant supply line had a hard line section routed around the dpf that somehow was running against the heat shield and wore a hole in it. Love the truck! Wife has a 21 Yukon Denali 6.2 which is awesome too other than the week before Christmas at 64,000miles number 5&6 rod bearings failed and the engine seized. I trust the 3.0 more than the current 6.2.

^^ ..There is no excuse for a rod bearing failure at 64,00 miles unless the oil was not changed regularly. The more I read the more I would never buy a 6.2 engined Chevrolet.

For sure! I bought it at 30,000miles and I’ve changed the oil every 4-5000 with pennzoil platinum ultra AC Delco gold filters and it lives an easy life. Definitely a higher rate of failure with the 6.2’s than there should be, thankfully Gm covered 70% of the bill for the new engine.

I have the 3.0L w/ Carbon Pro bed. First, I rally like the truck. But…there are a lot of after market accessories that are not compatible with the Carbon Pro bed. Second, it’s been in the shop for 2 of the 5 months I’ve owned it. Two issues. 1 was a main wiring harness in the 4WD co troller and this latest issue is apparently related to the starter. They fired the service manager at my dealer and the new guy found the part in a day. So not sure if these problems are going to turn into long term issues yet. 5k miles on it. Hoping to get it back before Christmas.
11 months into my 2023 AT4 LZ0 Carbon Pro. No issues, not a lot of miles (been working from home more and more lately), would buy again with some caveats.

I came from a 2nd Gen Tundra. All the aftermarket parts availability you could ask for. Niche truck in terms of production numbers, but the owners mod the shit out of them, and the aftermarket is ready to serve.

First caveat - the Carbon Pro bed. I thought it sounded amazing when reading and watching some videos. Bomb proof. Lighter. Carbon fiber (I'm a geek, so that turns me on). But it really limits what you can do with the truck in terms of aftermarket. There are a couple bed covers that have cracked the code. But no Deckd drawers. And as far as I can tell, no off-the-shelf canopies or bed racks.

Second caveat - Rancho suspension in the AT4 sucks ass. Nice and plush, no rebound control. Yes, I am spoiled by the Bilstein TRD Pro suspension in my last truck. But for this much money? Unacceptable. Waiting on the new OME MT64s to come out for our trucks. They look like the hot ticket in the way better than stock, but no not quite 2.5" Fox/Icon/King bracket. If those aren't around by summer or so, I'll be looking at Bilstein 6112/5160 or Icon EXP.

Third caveat - trim. The GMC is much nicer than the Chevy Silverado, IMHO. The AT4 has much more features than you can even build into the matching Trail Boss trim. At the time I bought, the ZR2 and AT4X were only 6.2 gasser. Starting in MY24, the 3.0 Duramax became available in those trims. Water under the bridge, and I bought at a good time and got a great deal and great incentivized financing. But. If I were to do it over, I might spend the extra (which isn't a huge lift from my fully loaded including carbon pro package AT4) for the AT4X and get the shit hot Multimatic dampers. Yeah, they might not hold up well in artic conditions. Virignia is pretty mild, so I think I'd be okay.

Final caveat - aftermarket. Touched on this with the Carbon Pro bed issue. But on the whole, the GMC sells less than the Chevy Silverado, and as such, there are less specific pieces for the Siera. Bumpers are a great case in point. I'd like to one day get a front winch mount bumper. There are some for the refreshed and ZR2/Trail Boss Silverados. And mostly promises and renderings for the Siera. Ford F150 or Toyota Tundra are kings of the aftermarket, based on sheer volume (F150) and the community (Tundra is yuuuuge with overlanders because Toyota).

After all that. I love my Sierra. Some small warts - basically suspension is a big let down. No mechanical issues with the LZ0, and that motor with the 10 speed is amazing. Big creamy torque wave that you ride. Don't try to drive it fast. Just enjoy the cruise. Bonus is that it's super quiet at highway speeds, and with all the tech and luxury in the AT4 trim, it feels more like a Lexus than a pickup. Even my father, a BMW/Porsche snob was blown away. I'm super impressed by the GM infotainment. Runs android natively (need to jailbreak it so I can download more apps lol), big high-res screen, great Google integration. I'm too old to crank it up, but at moderate levels it sounds good enough to my wore out ears. I'm blown away at how good the camera system is. High res images, does the construced 3D environment well, etc.

If you can live with the small list of caveats, or if they don't really matter to you - the Sierra is one hell of a truck.

Not sure I would do the AT4 version again as I did not do my homework and look into what the mileage was like for the 3.0 version. Granted it is not bad...just not the 30mpg that I thought it was going to get and that is all on me for not paying attention. I went the AT4 route as it is a great looking truck, and coming from a Ford F150 Tremor I am getting 7-8mpg better than that truck did. I wanted something comparable as far as lift, off-road, and if you consider that I was able to get a loaded 2024 AT4 for $65K that isn't bad when 2023 Ford Tremors were selling for $8K more comparably equipped. So the price difference buys a lot of diesel. (y)

44k miles and very pleased. Crank no start was resolved around 10k miles - not more issues with that. Def injector was replaced at 44k due to something with programming. Tech now chirping in the cab between 1200 and 1500 rpm.
Would I buy another - yes
