I have the 3.0L w/ Carbon Pro bed. First, I rally like the truck. But…there are a lot of after market accessories that are not compatible with the Carbon Pro bed. Second, it’s been in the shop for 2 of the 5 months I’ve owned it. Two issues. 1 was a main wiring harness in the 4WD co troller and this latest issue is apparently related to the starter. They fired the service manager at my dealer and the new guy found the part in a day. So not sure if these problems are going to turn into long term issues yet. 5k miles on it. Hoping to get it back before Christmas.
11 months into my 2023 AT4 LZ0 Carbon Pro. No issues, not a lot of miles (been working from home more and more lately), would buy again with some caveats.
I came from a 2nd Gen Tundra. All the aftermarket parts availability you could ask for. Niche truck in terms of production numbers, but the owners mod the shit out of them, and the aftermarket is ready to serve.
First caveat - the Carbon Pro bed. I thought it sounded amazing when reading and watching some videos. Bomb proof. Lighter. Carbon fiber (I'm a geek, so that turns me on). But it really limits what you can do with the truck in terms of aftermarket. There are a couple bed covers that have cracked the code. But no Deckd drawers. And as far as I can tell, no off-the-shelf canopies or bed racks.
Second caveat - Rancho suspension in the AT4 sucks ass. Nice and plush, no rebound control. Yes, I am spoiled by the Bilstein TRD Pro suspension in my last truck. But for this much money? Unacceptable. Waiting on the new OME MT64s to come out for our trucks. They look like the hot ticket in the way better than stock, but no not quite 2.5" Fox/Icon/King bracket. If those aren't around by summer or so, I'll be looking at Bilstein 6112/5160 or Icon EXP.
Third caveat - trim. The GMC is much nicer than the Chevy Silverado, IMHO. The AT4 has much more features than you can even build into the matching Trail Boss trim. At the time I bought, the ZR2 and AT4X were only 6.2 gasser. Starting in MY24, the 3.0 Duramax became available in those trims. Water under the bridge, and I bought at a good time and got a great deal and great incentivized financing. But. If I were to do it over, I might spend the extra (which isn't a huge lift from my fully loaded including carbon pro package AT4) for the AT4X and get the shit hot Multimatic dampers. Yeah, they might not hold up well in artic conditions. Virignia is pretty mild, so I think I'd be okay.
Final caveat - aftermarket. Touched on this with the Carbon Pro bed issue. But on the whole, the GMC sells less than the Chevy Silverado, and as such, there are less specific pieces for the Siera. Bumpers are a great case in point. I'd like to one day get a front winch mount bumper. There are some for the refreshed and ZR2/Trail Boss Silverados. And mostly promises and renderings for the Siera. Ford F150 or Toyota Tundra are kings of the aftermarket, based on sheer volume (F150) and the community (Tundra is yuuuuge with overlanders because Toyota).
After all that. I love my Sierra. Some small warts - basically suspension is a big let down. No mechanical issues with the LZ0, and that motor with the 10 speed is amazing. Big creamy torque wave that you ride. Don't try to drive it fast. Just enjoy the cruise. Bonus is that it's super quiet at highway speeds, and with all the tech and luxury in the AT4 trim, it feels more like a Lexus than a pickup. Even my father, a BMW/Porsche snob was blown away. I'm super impressed by the GM infotainment. Runs android natively (need to jailbreak it so I can download more apps lol), big high-res screen, great Google integration. I'm too old to crank it up, but at moderate levels it sounds good enough to my wore out ears. I'm blown away at how good the camera system is. High res images, does the construced 3D environment well, etc.
If you can live with the small list of caveats, or if they don't really matter to you - the Sierra is one hell of a truck.
