Planning to make a new truck purchase and I have never purchased a warranty for my trucks but this purchase will be with me for many years! I have a history of buying new every 3 years before my warranty goes out but this purchase will different. I would appreciate some feedback on this on going question! I did search the forum and found many are old threads but it would be nice to hear some new thoughts on this for matter!
thanks in advance

Just my personal view for what it is worth.

Warranty sales are pure profit. OEM, after market, cell phone companies, and many retailers push these hard because it is pure profit for them. Even $100 toaster ovens on Amazon offer you a warranty because it is pure profit for those sellers. Sales people are pushed to sell them as “the house wins” on these.

Many people buy them, never use them or only use a small amount vs. what they paid and the seller makes bank.

Many of these are going for 3k to 8k. That is a lot of money.

Think about how many repairs you have really had in your life and what that would add up to over the course of all vehicles you have owned.

They want you to feel like you have piece of mind and make the sell off emotions, “I am now covered for the future.”

I do all my own maintenance and take good care of our rigs but in my entire life I have never had a repair that cost me over 1k and have only had 1 of those. Maybe just lucky. Now if I paid say $5k for an extend warranty on the last 5 cars I bought I would have given away $20k with nothing to show for it.

I just bought my daughter her first car for $21k so basically “free” because I have not given away my money for “just in case”.

If you can be disciplined and keep money on hand you can grow that money yourself and have it available should something go wrong. Even if I have a catastrophic engine failure and need to pay $15k to fix my truck I am still money ahead in the overall picture.

Some day I will experience an electric issue or what ever and may have to pay $2k to deal with it but that is still less than any warranty and I think my odds have shown that is still unlikely.

I also hate dealers and warranty claims suck. You still have to process it and hope they accept and cover your claim should you have one. I would rather walk in to a shop pay them $800 if needed and walk out, still money ahead.

I also don’t trade in my cars and keep most of them for well over 10 years. Had by last F150 for 17 years and 200,000 miles, never spent a dime on a break down, sold it with everything still functioning fine. We have 5 vehicles currently and no extended warranty’s, and 2 of those vehicles are both $90k or more.

I plan on keeping my current 2024 AT4X HD for 13-15 years. Only 1 repair under warranty on it in the last 2 years for a bladder valve that failed on my massage seat. My 36k warranty just passed but I have no concerns.

Personal choice for everyone but that is how I view it.

You will get a lot of different opinions on this and while far ranging, none are wrong. Warranties are just a form of insurance and in cases where the insurance is not required (like with car insurance) then what you are buying is peace of mind. So, that makes the decision very subjective. There are however some facts to consider in your analysis.
1. Most major problems will likely occur while vehicle is under factory warranty. Engines, drivetrain, even major electrical.
2. After the factory warranty expires, repairs are hit and miss. Some never have a repair for 10 years beyond basic worn parts. Others have a modest amount, and still others have horror stories.
3. I suspect that the majority of folks never have any major repairs over 8 or 10 years.
4. For those with moderate repairs (air compressor, infotainment computer module, window power modulator, truck computer, those all range in the 1500 to 3000 dollar range. If you had just one of those, you would likely break even with a warranty.
5. For those that fall above the moderate level, especially with electrical, it adds up very fast. Year 4 you have an AC compressor go out = 2000. Year five the PS unit starts making noise = 1200. Year five you also notice the passenger door no longer rolls down = 600. Year 6 the bearings in the rear end are making noise = 1800. So, by the end of year 6 you are into about 5600 and counting. Now you would wish you had an extended warranty.
6. The cost of the GMC Platinum warranty varies sharply across dealers. The non-GMC warranties are normally not good and have frustrating small print that you are not aware of until you need to use them. GMC Platinum is actually one of the better warranties in the auto industry.
7. It is true that GMC makes a ton of money (profit) on these plans.
8. You are not required to buy the extended warranty from the dealer you buy the truck from...any GMC dealer will sale you one and Todd Sutherland sales them at near wholesale cost.
9.. You also do not have to buy them when the truck is new. You can buy them anytime the truck is still under factory warranty.

So, what does all this conclude? If you don't need it but you have it, you didn't waste 3000 because you at least received the peace of mind during that time it gave you coverage. If you actually need it during that time, you will be glad you have it. So for me it comes down to a few important questions that each person will answer differently:
1. Can you afford it?
2. Is the peace of mind important to you?
3. What will your finances be in 5 years?

For me, I can afford it. I like the peace of mind and I like knowing that when i travel I can take a problem to any Chevy or GMC dealer to have it fixed. I am now fully retired and do not want expensive pop-up expenses in the next 5 years or so. So for me, yes, I purchased the extended GMC Platinum warranty. I paid 3100 for an 84 month, 100,000 mile, 0 deductible plan. I hope I never need it, but I like not having to worry about it either.

What truck are you buying? If you're getting one of the unreliable bunch - canyon, Colorado, 1500 sierra, Yukon, Escalade, suburban etc then yeah - I don't trust any of those vehicles to last and if I really really wanted one then I probably would get a warranty.

Take a look around these forums and others. I get a lot of hate for talking smack about those vehicles but you can't deny the obvious common theme.

If you're getting an HD - there aren't many issues. They are there, but not to the extent of the others. 6.6 Duramax is mainly emission issues that are mostly user error. 6.6 gas doesn't have much problem either. Ford 7.3 gas has been pretty trouble free too. The transmission is the weak link but that should fall under your power train warranty anyway. Or you can be like me and many others and upgrade your valve body.

My personal rule of thumb is if the truck is trouble free the first year as the miles rack up and it gets closer to the 36k/3 year mark - I look back. Did I go to the dealer for anything? Did I have a ton of electrical issues? If the answers are no then extended warranty is not happening. And honestly, if I were having many problems, in and out of a dealership, I won't be able to trust the vehicle and will look to get rid of it anyway.

Also these warranties, the dealer always does everything they can to say it's not a warranty issue. Then what? You're still paying out of pocket.

In summary - decline everything. You can always get a warranty later.
