Suspension Rattle - Front End

Well....I guess there is a first for everything.....I remounted those side steps last night, positioned them slightly different than the first time I installed them and no noise currently on my way to work. I made sure to snug them down to the body pretty good with a couple extra ugga duggas with the 3/8" impact..If you the do the same thing I did make sure you understand the amount of ugga duggas needed or you will strip threads on the body and have a bigger issue on your hands

If you have similar noise issue I do and it's coming from one side or driver side I would check the following in this order:

(1) Coolant Reservoir Tank - 2 bolts holding that reservoir on and factory sometimes doesn't tighten those down very well

(2) Side Steps - unbolt the bracket that mounts to the body, reposition slightly and snug that SOB down so it limits as much vibration as possible

(3) Check suspension parts over and make sure bolts are tight and no loose ball joints or end links, etc.

I will keep everyone posted over the next few weeks on whether the noise comes back or not. If it does and I can trace it to the steps for sure then I will probably make some rubber washers to place in between the body & bracket to reduce vibrations. Hope this helps anyone with similar issue as mine.

I checked my coolant tank bolt/nuts and seemed to be fairly snug. I also have a 6.6 gasser so I think our coolant tank only had (2) nuts that you could tighten down to fasten that to the fender.

Those pictures that you sent are the aluminum tape you put on I take it?

No sir, I did put some where those 2 shields met. When that didn't quiet it down any more, I put more at the top of the heat shield. It was easier to access the top of the shield from the hood side. When I started down this path a month ago, I tapped everything with a screw driver. Pounded things with my fist. Shook hoses and cable looms under the hood. That coolant tank never made a noise. I also pressured washed multiple times everything in that fender well and window area in case it was leaves that got stuck some where. This time when I opened the hood that screw on the top of the reservoir had 4 threads showing. And it made a lot of noise.

Yeah I have heard those coolant reservoir bolts/nuts aren't put on tight from factory and have been causing a ruckus for some individuals. Unfortunately, that wasn't the problem with my truck as I checked that right away when I was hearing the noise.

I would say if you are getting similar noise and you made sure that coolant reservoir is nice and tight the next thing to do is remove side steps and see if that fixes the problem. Hopefully the noise will stay away now since I have addressed the side steps but we will see in a few weeks.

Tightening that bolt stopped it. The aluminum tape on the heat shields did make a change in the noise but it was minor. I probably wouldn;t have heard the heat shield noise if I wasn't looking for the louder noise. In full disclosure, i may have been resting on the coolant reservoir the first couple of times I checked. When I laid my forearm on the fender that's when I noticed the bolt was backing out.

Well unfortunately, the rattle is back today. Truck has been sitting for about a week as I have been driving my beater mobile around and I decided to roll the window down to check on my way to work....

I am going to pull the steps back off tonight and see if I can get the rattle to go away.....I'm honestly dumbfounded at this point...

Side steps are removed and same noise is still present…

I have a feeling when it was at the dealership, they greased all the zerks on steering rack/suspension and this takes away the noise for a week or so. I’ve thought about greasing it myself and see if noise goes away but I’ve got an appointment with dealership again to prove it wasn’t the steps making the noise.

It’s either steering rack or suspension related from my perspective….I’ll keep everyone posted in the next week or so. I personally didn’t think it was the steps the first time as I had these exact same steps on a different truck. Definitely a weird issue but hopefully I’ll get this tracked down.

Well ladies and gents......think we might have found the culprit to the rattle noise.

Driver side front wheel hub had to be replaced and there was some type of ring (reluctor ring?) on the cv axle that was loose from the factory and rattling around. For reference, my truck has just surpassed the 4,000 mile mark but was making this noise roughly around the 2,000 mile mark.

This was a brand new truck in June 2025. I am a bit concerned the passenger side may eventually have the same issue given potential part defects or factory install lapses.... All I am going to say is that quality control must be a thing of the past.

My rattle exactly like this started today. Truck was just in the dealership for alignment and oil change. 10K miles on my 2026 SLt gasser. Noise came outta nowhere today. It’s definitely metallic and tin cany.

Interestingly enough, I pulled my running boards off day I bought my truck. So I’ll check the bolts that I left in the holes but don’t think that’s it.

Upon tapping around, driver side dust shield behind caliper does rattle differently than passenger side. So I’ll try and tighten that. But I’ll investigate further. Keep me posted and I’ll do the same

You can also take a gander at the windshield washer tank. There has been reports that some of those bolts are not tightened and allows the tank to rattle around the inner wheel well.

Whatever it is, I’m about to go scorched earth until it’s found. Too much money spent to be doing this and be an effin mystery. I will sleep a little better tonight though knowing I’m not the only one
