Someone calm my 6.2 fears...

Well......I started hearing some sort of ticking/tapping on my way in to work this morning. I pulled in my parking spot at the office and put it in park then decided to try to duplicate it. Rev'd up the engine a bit and the ticking gets way more pronounced. I'm assuming I got bit by the lifter tap.....F&*!

I would say so. That's almost identical to what mine sounded like. Keep us updated.

Did you happen to see what the oil pressure was reading? That rapping noise when you rev it sure sounds like a rod bearing spun..

Well….update…it’s dead in a parking lot. Was limping to the dealership with almost no acceleration on the Dallas North Tollway during rush hour. Won’t ever start now…will update with findings

Damn sorry to hear. How many miles?

Curious, did you install an oil catch can?
No everything mechanical is OEM. The only things I've done are the Boost Auto headlight mods and cargo light mods. Nothing performance related.

At this point, I'm waiting for the dealership to diagnose, which we already know what's going on, but it's a process.

So to give a little better sense of what I experienced yesterday:

I called the dealership yesterday morning and made an appointment for today since that was the first available loaner vehicle they had. I decided it would be better for me to just drive it there after work yesterday since I have a third vehicle at home anyway. So I left work and conditions were as they were yesterday morning. But I didn't get a mile down the road and it starts squealing and sputtering and I knew things were turning REAL South! The route to the dealership was about 20 miles but I thought if I could just get it there it would be fine. As I'm driving on the tollway in really congested traffic, it's sputtering and jerking and squealing...like an old beat up washing machine. I had my wife on the phone and she was able to hear it, too. The further I drove the worse it got and I started getting nervous. Traffic came to a brief stop and when I stopped...it died. Shit.....I managed to get it restarted and continued on my now perilous journey toward the dealership in traffic. And it died again. I got it started again, this time with a little more effort and kept driving but decided I should probably get off the freeway just to be safe. I took the next exit and of course came to a stop light....where it died. Got it started again and kept going...to the next light. And it died.....but this time it took a few tries to get it started again....and it struggled. I made my way through the intersection and finally decided it was time to call it....so I pulled into a parking lot and as I was backing into the space so the tow truck could have access to it....it breathed its final breath. Tried to start it again....and....Nothing. Click. No crank, no anything. And of course you can't get it out of Park at that point. "Conditions for shift not met"....yeah real good idea GM! The tow truck driver and I tried a few things and nothing worked and I eventually left, as my wife showed up to take me to the dealership.

After leaving the dealership in my loaner, a 2025 1500 5.3L Elevation (not awful by any means) I'm on my way home and I get a call from GM Roadside and apparently the tow truck driver needed me to come back and sign a damage waiver because they were going to have to put my truck on skates to get it on the flatbed. I don't think the guy was very happy when I told him I wasn't driving 40 miles back to where I left my truck to sign any waiver. He said "well they may not be able to take the vehicle without your signature", to which I explained that if that's the case, then they may have to find another tow service because I left my vehicle in their hands and it was Their job to handle all of that and I was NOT going back to sign a waiver. Besides I had a zoom meeting I was due on in about 5 minutes. I got a call around 7:15 from the two truck driver saying he was at the dealership and asking where to leave the key.

So now we play the waiting game. My advisor was at least very helpful and went out of his way to get me something to drive as I'm sure he fully understand the gravity of the situation and said I likely won't hear anything until next week, which is fine. At this point, though....I feel a bit like a fraud. Here I am last week explaining to the OP of this thread that I'm on my 2nd 6.2L truck with zero issues....and a week later my truck is DOA. SO can I really help quell anyone's fears/reservations on the GM L86 6.2L? Unfortunately.....No. And....it may be on the chopping block after it's repaired.

I hate to read a story like this. I'm one of the few that I've read that was fortunate enough to be able to get it to a dealership before it completely died. You got real lucky with the loaner. My 2 loaners for the month they had my truck were a Chevy Cruze and Chrysler Pacifica!
Regardless, hopefully they can find an engine for you without having to wait months. I too would consider another brand but Ford doesn't wow me right now and as much as I like Ram, I'm not a fan of them getting rid of their V8's.

Honestly the truck they have me in is nice....but I won't be in it that long. My service advisor has already said they'll have me come back and put me in a rental because their loaner is limited to 125 miles/day. So we'll see how that goes.

I actually got online yesterday and was checking out a Ford Raptor R....Nope. Not paying $116K for a truck I'll get 10 mpg at best during my daily commute. And I'm not a Ford guy, even though I do like driving my son's '21 Bronco. Might consider the Ram RHO. Had three Rams in the past and they were all great so I guess we'll see how this whole ordeal unfolds.

When the ticking/tapping starts, can you hear it in the cab while driving?

When I was at highway speeds....no not really. It wasn't until I was coming to a stop or going slow that I actually noticed anything was off.....at first. But when I left work yesterday, I didn't get a mile down the road before I was hearing a squeaking noise and the longer I drove, the more pronounced it got until the truck was literally shuddering under acceleration....like an old washing machine with a bad belt.

To make matters worse....the tow truck yesterday afternoon didn't even pick up my truck. They left it because they didn't have the right equipment and didn't even bother to call and tell me. Imagine my surprise when my service advisor called this morning asking where my truck was. I called Roadside assistance again and got a new tow company assigned and on the way earlier this morning. About an hour ago the tow truck driver called asking if the Storm gray AT4X was the one he was picking up. Turns out...he has the same truck....and his has been at a dealership for two months now. He's working with GM on either a replacement or buy back.

My truck finally made it to the dealership about 30 minutes ago.

And OP....I sincerely apologize for highjacking your thread. I feel bad that I can't help make you feel better about your truck.

I had the exact same thing happen to me with my '21 Sierra 1500 AT4. Except for mine broke down in FL, 1000+ miles from home. I had to pay $1200 to ship it back to the dealership where I bought it. Truck broke down on me only a few days after I purchased it with 60000 miles. Dealership did not disclose anything to me about these lifter issues or the NHTSA investigation when I bought it and let me drive off the lot in a ticking time bomb.
