Hey fellas. I’m the new owner of a 2026 GMC Sierra 3500 AT4 (Duramax) and I’m looking at leveling or lifting the truck. I’ve narrowed the choice down to the Cognito 3” leveling kit or the Cognito 4” lift. I’ll probably go with the Elka shocks due to their adjustability.
I’m concerned about 1) Ride Quality, 2) Tow-ability, 3) Aesthetics.
I’m having issues with having to cut the frame in order to get a 4” lift and I’m worried that the leveling kit will ride like shit especially when towing. For reference I’m currently towing a boat and a travel trailer, each weighing about 8k fully loaded. But I want to maintain room to grow on the truck (like a 5th wheel trailer).

For those of you with experience, which rides better: lift or levelling kit? Which tows better?

Is there any quality lift kit that doesn’t require hacking the frame?

Can someone convince me that I shouldn’t worry about cutting the frame on my nearly $100k new truck?

Thanks!

I can’t really compare/contrast for you, but I can give you a direct field report reference lifting a 2024 3500 AT4 HD. I went with the BDS 6.5 inch lift, along with the Fox 2.5 adjustable reservoir shocks. I’ve since pulled a 7,000 pound travel trailer about 1,000 total miles with that setup.

Like you, I was nervous about making permanent frame modifications, but I am completely happy with this setup. The adjustable Fox shocks allow you to dial in a soft ride when you’re tooling around unladen, and add in just the right of resistance when you add the trailer. Very happy with the Fox/BDS product, and would do it again in a heartbeat.

For additional reference, I’m running 37 x 13.5 x 22 Nitto Ridge Grapplers, which have an F load rating.
