Difference between GMC and Chevy

Not sure this is the right forum but the closest I could find: Just "what" is the difference between Chevy and GMC?

Reason for asking: I saw a Chevy HD 2500 yesterday that was gorgeous and just got to thinking. Same company, same engines/tranny, etc. What is the distinction?

Just trim?

Any mechanical differentiation?

You nailed it, basically trim features and style. GMC usually offers some upper end features Chevy does not offer. For example I don’t think Chevy offers massaging seats in the Bison HD while the gmc AT4 X does. You get the kicker tailgate sound system in the AT4x and Denali but Chevy equivalent does not.

My grandpa was a GM mechanic back in the 50's and 60's. Back then there were a few significant mechanical differences between the two. But he told my dad, "A GMC is just a Chevy with lockwashers!" And I believe that difference still stands today!
