Time is money and for those that can afford it, time is worth more than money.
I spent many many years doing the elbow grease method and while I enjoyed it to an extent, it was, and still is, a constant upkeep that takes up alot of time. I still enjoy detailing my vehicles to make them look showroom condition, I just have to spend tremendously less time doing it than you do. Granted not everyone can afford it, but to call it stupid, is just ignorant and short sighted.
I'll agree that 7 years is optimal conditions, but it's certainly not 'just a few months' unless your abusing the hell out of it. The tech is constantly evolving. Mine just passed 5 years and still works amazingly well. Not sure where you get that it takes off the clear coat either.
