Trailer Brake Recall

I had this issue and had to use a Curt Echo bluetooth brake controller for an 8k mile trip. Got home and thought about it and unplugged my solar and all worked fine. I just installed a disconnect on my solar but this is great to hear.

I had this same issue on my Tundra (with this same trailer) and had to install an aftermarket brake controller and bypass the factory. I just assumed it was some weird way this trailer was wired but I guess not.

Today was a day of successes, what the hey after lots of stress relief, I'll list them all.

I remember when I'd buy a new GM truck if you ordered the trailer tow package or just the factory hitch it came with a separate Trailer tow guidebook.

In the guidebook was taped / or a plastic page with an tiny envelope with a 30 Amp fuse if you wanted the truck to charge the trailer battery(s) you put the fuse in the TRL BATT CHRG slot in the trucks fuse box.

That way if you forgot to unplug the trailer at night you'd wake up with a dead truck battery and it was on you for installing the fuse and forgetting to unplug dry camping.

So now GM trucks come with the TRL BATT CHRG fuse already installed. That thought was in the back of my thick melon. I'll get back to that.

Like I mentioned earlier in this thread, our new GM Truck was towing fine for almost 7.000 perfect-trailer-brake working miles. Then the towing brake module recall was done and suddenly we had no trailer brakes anymore. Terrifying.
Dealer service writer only looked at me with a blank 1000 mile stare. Installed another New module, again no brakes and another 1000 mile stare.

So I got to thinking and found that rogue fuse mentioned earlier, removed it, and I have trailer brakes once again. I towed all over town yesterday and perfect brakes.

Back-flowing power from the Toy Haulers solar system to the truck thru the TRL BATT CHRG circuit was corrupting the board. A problem the recall was supposed to correct, pulling the simple fuse did the trick. All it does it put a charge on the batteries nothing more, it's redundant and unnecessary with solar charging on the trailer.
So, all relieved I think I got that figured out.

Success # 2:

Toy Hauler fuel dispenser fuel pump decide to not work. First trip out we're on the edge of Death Valley in the desert.
I call the mfg, they sent two You Tube Videos on how to reprogram the NEW controller.
I found their are 3 different programs for 3 different kind of controllers they make = nine different programs to simply turn the pumps on. Up to me to figure out which is for which.

So I unplug & plug in the programmer as directed and you have 8 seconds to program it to run right. Different lights flash and at those moments you have to push the left or right lower button then both buttons in proper order or vice versa when certain lights-light up,,,, then maybe ya got it right, or you are dead in the water with nothing and start over.

I finally hit it correct even better and it's now a simple turn on or off controller.

Success 3:
Was distributing the Proof of Insurance slips in the vehicles and noticed the new Toy Hauler wasn't listed on the slips.
Headed to AAA, sat down at the agents desk.
Agent said "Yeah, your Toy Hauler is not listed on the policy."

So I scrolled thru my phones emails and found all the AAA communications, photos and such from the first visit to AAA after I bought the TH to put it on our policy. Then the agent put our Toy Hauler on the policy.

I remember the first visit to AAA to put it on the policy back in May, me coming home and telling the wife the AAA Agent chick was disturbing, weird.
I found in further conversation she was fired a few hours after I left the office and the AAA office never completed her days work.

Not the first time I've had goofy transactions at AAA. Travel agent,, well, that's a thread for a different forum.

Epilogue:
I rolled by our RV dealer yesterday to pick up a check for a trailer they sold for us on consignment.
Walking back to the car I met the RV Dealer owner and his son and he asked "Hows it going?"

I told them about the Failed trailer brake issue.

He said: "Oh yeah, we sold some new Brickman Toy Haulers and buyers with GM truck had no brakes.
We searched the internet hours for a solution."

"Finally after Googling the problem in several different descriptions we found a mid west farmer with a new GM truck that suffered the same problem.
He Removed the TRL BATT CRG fuse, brakes work perfect."

Good to hear it all worked out fine in the end :)

I got the new module installed a couple of weeks ago after almost eating a wall as I was being pushed by the 16k behind me. 😱. Now I'm taking that damn fuse out! Thanks for the trial and error.

We had no issue one year of superb towing with our 3500 DRW.
Did the recall and now our trailer brakes failed.
It’s terrifying.

Hi! Same problem here. Didn't even know they had changed anything on ours and was towing our show horses home down a mountain pass and the damn brakes went in and out again over and over AFTER they said they applied the recall and fix. Did you get any resolution?

Also! I have no solar on my trailer.....It has EOH brakes. Apparently the fix works for the solar issue but messes you up if you dont have solar but have EOH brakes on your trailer.....

We puled the fuse, and were fine for a month. Now another dis connect problem is either the cord and plug from the trailer or socket on the truck. We will replace both.
Ya have cheap cords and plugs and ya have expensive good cords and plugs.
We think the trailer mfg may have installed cheap ones.

OK this went full circle.
Finally found the remedy.
Didn't want to post until we were 100% sure we found the solution.

The GM Dealer blamed the trailer, the trailer dealer blamed the truck. Around and around.

A GMC engineer found on certain trailers they use various brands of electrical brake controllers.
Some of the trailers brake systems back feed rogue power to the truck corrupting the Trailer control module AKA the "board."
In our case the 600 Watt Solar/lithium system.

A modification part was made to the 7 point plug connection on/in the trailer and the problems solved.
GM has a Tech bulletin out on this fix. Why the trailer MFG hasn't notified owners is the head scratcher. It's a HUGE issue according to our trailer dealer.
Replacing the trucks brake control module fixes other similar issues, but not this one.

I cannot express how happy we are.
Patience with a cool head, and perseverance came thru once again.

Hope no one experiences this but if you do there is a solution for it.
Rest easy.
