The Future of Infotainment Systems

This!! As I was just looking at the one I recently got, I haven't been in the car market for over 12 years. Was driving a Toyota Sequoia and it still runs great. I was shocked though how the packages they offer on these cars are so random. Oh you want leather seats??? You also have to buy the enormous sunroof to go with that. You want a bench seat in the middle in the back? Sorry you can't have that unless you get the base model and the minute you add a package to it, you must remove that seat.

I get that they have assembly lines and they need to keep things moving, but I feel that it would be nice to have an option to pick things you want and custom order a vehicle even if it means waiting for a few months to get what you want. I also think the entire process of having to order through a dealer is dumb.....I should be able to order what I want online, pay a deposit, and have it sent somewhere for me to pick it up.

I know the dealers need to make money and a lot of people work there, but I feel like the process is always painful and needs to be reviewed...kinda like real estate.
To me for the most part, there is no reason why this cannot be a glorified LEGO set when building a truck. Far easier to do when you isolate things vs integrating everything together unnecessarily. Your experience demonstrates the consumer’s interaction with their product and how it’s just not good.

Getting back to infotainment … I sure hope the 2027 has a better sound system. I also want more control over the screen real estate. Finally, I want all of the cameras on the car to be front/rear “dash cams”. I’ll gladly pay GM $50 a year for access to the video in the cloud (Ring charges $100/year/home for unlimited cameras).

There is no reason the cars cameras can’t be dash cams. I would think this could be a software update for everyone that has a fairly current system. Only reason I could see they might have an issue is storage. But surely they could utilize one of the USB ports for a jump drive if needed. I too would be happy to pay a fee to use it.

I've always wondered why they don't put a 1TB solid state drive in and record all cameras all the time. That would be more than enough space, tiny, and they could just loop the storage.

For the price of these cars there is no reason they don't. I would be curious if they maybe have everything in there already but the software isn't ready. From what I have seen, the software works pretty well....but I am sure they have a lot of capability they could push over the air.

telling my age here but, i can remember when some cars had record players in them
anyone remember the 8 track or fm converter
Come on now, the 8 track wasn't that long ago! It was just last year it seems.

How about that mile long, bunched up, tape all tangled up on the side of roads! 😁

I have a Pioneer cd disk changer under the '95 GMC's seat, that broadcasts over a fm channel on the radio to play thru the oem speakers.

No use for the infotainment system and all the "let me help you drive" the rear camera for the hitch is handy but not essential. Offer us a basic truck with the option for heated seats and steering wheel and I am in. Less stuff to break down and keep the price affordable.

Agree.

saw a segment on tv about how technology is moving so fast
that car manufacturing is having a hard time keeping up
by the time the new models are built the technology had advanced
what else can they stuff in there? as soon as you think they can't do anymore
the next thing seems to appear. what do you guys think
I have some newer vehicles, but when electronic sensors and associated crap quit working, I’ll jump in my 79 Z/28, fire it up and smile like I’m 23 again 😂
No AC, crank windows, am radio with one dash speaker! Oh, and not a single computer or sensor or misc. associated crap!
My navigation is folded up in the glove compartment and no shifting issues with the Super T-10!

Sounds like a BS excuse and I say that because consumers have had computers for how long now? 50 years or so? That's all they are a tablet. They choose the cheepier technology and charge a premium price. Thats why the Trucks cost so much these days. If I have more technology in my phone, then of course they have the technology to better quality in the infotainment center. Just saying...
