What's new

Running board lights.

They do not; they only come on when unlocking with keyfob. With the truck unlocked, no keyfob etc. opening any door does lower the running board but light does not come on. With the engine running and say you stop to pick someone up (especially in the dark), the running board lights don't turn on.

There was a lot of discussion on this subject a while ago.
What good are they then!

Maybe I'm not stating it correctly. I feel the gm engineering should have designed the running board lights come on, whenever the puddle lights come on!

I wasn't trying to state that they are designed to come on with puddle lights, but that they should.

ETA... me and words don't get along sometimes! 😁

Pretty useless when you need them most. They look great when approaching and hitting the unlock key on the keyfob in the dark however pretty useless for anything else. Thats another mod I need to work on when I have time.

Im missing something here. The running board lights should come on anytime the door is open. Pretty sure this happens even in the daylight, just cant see it.
When mine is running and I open door lights don't come on. You would think they should.

I went out tonight and did a few experiments with the running board lights:

First test:

1: Unlock with door handle button: Lights come on before door is even open. (this is how I would normally operate). Wait 30 minutes to start second test.

Second test:

1: Remote start: Lights come on with remote start.

2: 5 minutes after remote start with engine still running lights are still on. Unlock with remote, lights stay on.

3: 10 minutes after remote start and 5 minutes after unlock with remote, lights still on. Doors still unlocked ( I have auto lock enabled). Open door, close door, lights still on.

4: 5 more minutes test complete. Lights have stayed on since step 1 of second test. Not sure what else is needed. I dont doubt some people have issues because I am also certain they do not all behave exactly the same. Might be due to software version or specific settings.

5: Just after I typed step 4 the truck shut down due to 15 minute remote start limit. All lights off at this time but the running board lights stayed on the entire 15 minutes.

If this is an issue with door being open with truck in gear I would have no idea and neither would my passengers understand or even care there are lights under the running boards.

Not remote start. I know the lights will remain on with remote start on that cycle.

Sit in the truck, manually start it. With engine running, open any door, check if lights come on.

Did not come on. Never noticed. Guess that means it's not that big of deal to me but I get any frustration.

You pull up at night to pick mail from the community mailbox, or open a door with engine running at night, and this darn beautiful truck fails to light up my AT4X AEV steps, which are like at least 16" off the ground. I can understand it does not need to light up each time a door opens, especially when the truck is not running, parked unlocked in the garage, but it needs to come on every time in low or no ambient light conditions. I find it so annoying, need to do something about it.
