First Oil Change

I changed my oil myself at around 1300 miles and then had the dealer do the free oil change and tire rotation at 6000 miles. I plan on doing my own service from now on every 5000 miles. I'm keeping reciepts and noting the maintenance in the Fuelio app.

When I bought the truck I purchased a 3rd party extended warranty. That warranty stated that servicing had to be done at the dealer or an approved vendor. I asked the dealer if this excluded me from doing my own oil changes and he told me they might give me a hard time. I canceled that extended warranty.
Many dealerships automatically include "lifetime" warranty with all their vehicles but require maintenance at their place or pre-approval each time. I've had them, never thought about using or activating them, let alone having the dealer do oil changes. Only warranty or recall will get me to take it back.

It’s a mix of mileage, hours, and fuel usage.

My trucks average at 34k miles is 200hrs or 6300 miles per service. I stopped detail notes for services on my last Denali bc the truck records everything now on its own. A receipt for fluids and filters can be matched to services on its computer.
The computer cannot record when the drain plug and filter were removed and replaced, only that the oil life was reset.

This thread is no longer useful for anyone. Someone had to keep arguing something they know nothing about and it's not even relevent. I'm out but will leave you with this:

Do I have to use the oil and filter they use to still have the free oil changes for life or can I use whatever I want? About to change my oil at 2200 miles, should’ve changed it sooner but life got in the way. Any help is appreciated!

Took mine in at 5k this week.
I bought mine from a dealer 90mins away so when I took it to my local dealer expected that I might have to pay, but not so the first one was on GM.

Yeah, in the old days when having a motor rebuilt, you’d have to do a break-in and be easy with it and change oil soon because of rings. But these motors have already been broken in. It’s like some who still can’t comprehend going over 5,000 miles on an oil change on one of these brand new vehicles. But that was based on using regular motor oil and not synthetic on those cast iron blocks that wore easily. And the materials the engines and rings are made of now are a lot different and better and a lot more resistant to wear. No more having to bore out a cylinder a lot after 100,000 miles. I remember the old days of seeing that black strip running down the middle of a lane from the oil dripping off of vehicles. It’s not like that anymore
Um, they're not 'already broken in', but break-in mileage is shorter. Engine metallurgy, synthetic oil, unleaded fuels, narrower working temperature range have all contributed to that. GM, though, still recommends holding engine speed to under 4000 RPM, and to not tow for the first 500 miles.

I don't think there's a different oil in them from the factory, but don't know that. The oil change interval is the same, but being easy on the engine/drivetrain for the first 500 miles is recommended. I'll probably take ours in for the first oil change (on GM's dime) at about 1000 miles. Wanting to be as nice as I can on this 6.2.
