DEF Fluid rookie question

I'm ready to add some DEF for the first time. I'm going with Blue DEF for no particular reason. The guage reads 1/2 in the instrument cluster. How much to I add? Can I add too much?

I fill up at a truck stop and have done that from the start; I fill it like gas until full, although it’s a narrower nozzle.

You CAN add too much, in the sense that it will overflow from the filler neck on you. Have a hose ready to wash it off the truck immediately if that happens, as it’s not too friendly to your paint and plastic if it’s allowed to sit. Your DEF tank should hold 7 gallons total, so depending on on how finicky your gauge is, you should have room for about 3-3.5 gallons.

Don't keep it full, these things sip DEF and it gets old. I only add live in the 1/2 to 1/8 tank range to keep it freaher.

I fill mine up when my banks idash says I'm at 60%. A 2.5 gallon jug will take it to 100.

Third for truck stops. That is the most fresh option..your usual jug at autozone could be sitting there for over a year.
