Contaminated Diesel Fuel

Dealership finally go back to me with an update and it has good and bad news.
Good news: The dealership determined the contaminate is not DEF, so the entire fuel system does not have to be replaced. Meaning, it wont cost the originally quoted $22,000.
Bad news: They still aren't able to say confidently what the contaminant is. The plan now is to drain the fuel tank, flush the system and clean the injectors. Once that is done, they will start it up and test. This alone is about $3,000.

They did suggest I make a auto insurance claim to help defray the costs. I submitted that last night, so we'll see how they respond.
Hi, I am having exactly the same issue with fuel contamination on 2024 GMC 3.0 duramax. Dealership replaced entire fuel system and truck still won’t start, now it needs another fuel system replacement +possibly engine because they found metal debris in fuel. Were you able to resolve it? I would appreciate your advice

Sorry to read. How many miles?

What was the root cause for the first replacement?

Who pays for this repair? Dealer, GMC or out of pocket?

Hi Bango, I just replied to your private message. For the benefit of the group, here was my response:
Metal in the fuel system? That sounds far worse than what I had. Mine was determined to be contamination from E85, so the dealer flushed and cleaned the fuel system and the truck has been fine since then. Do you have any ideas what is contaminating your fuel supply?

I don't have my 2020 3.0 anymore (23 AT4X 6.2 now), but I often wondered about fuel contamination. When I was working in Nebraska (every other month or so over the course of 3.5 yrs), the local, small town, gas station has very old pumps and tanks. They also always have the lowest prices on diesel and gas. In any case, I often wondered if these old tanks had more contaminants in them and if it was risky to get fuel from this station.

On that note, I also always wondered what kind of havoc some bad-actor could cause by putting something besides regular diesel into my tank. Since GM doesn't have a gas cap (and I never bought a locking gas cap solution), it seemed like it would be easy for someone to dump something wrong/bad into my tank without my knowledge. That being said, IDK what things a person could put into diesel that would ruin a diesel engine. What are some of the worst things a person could dump into a diesel tank if they wanted to ruin an engine? I suppose I could google this, but probably get better answers here.

As far as my 6.2, I don't worry about that as much, but maybe I should. Diesels seem more prone to these issues, but I may be wrong on that. BTW, I am done building these houses for my parents in Nebraska (been done since May), so I doubt I will be back there any time soon to use this old local gas station.
