Another 2023 1500 AT4 6.2 failure with 12k miles

I got the dreaded letter in the mail from GM for the engine lifter bores being oversized. The letter sated that your GMC dealer will replace the engine. this service will be performed for you at no charge until May 31, 2026. My 23 has 16K miles and not a lick of problems but have read on this forum the various horror stories of them failing multiple times. So I made an appointment with my dealer and dropped off the truck this morning. They said it would take about a week to replace it.

Love the truck and like I said have had zero issues thus far. My question is has anyone switched over to the 3.0 diesel from the 6.2L? If so what was the driving factors for you?

My 2020 AT4 6.2 had lifter failure at 28k miles back in November of 2021, dealer replaced cylinder head kit, drove it 2 miles and it failed again, replaced cylinder head kit, did not get out of the parking lot when the motor locked up. GM replaced the entire motor, I sold the truck and unfortunately bought a new 2022 AT4X with the 6.2, yesterday after 49k uneventful miles this motor also died. Dealer tells me that they have 8 or 9 other trucks in waiting for new motors. GM has an issue and they need to be proactive and take care of the problem and customers. This is my third AT4 purchase from the same dealer within 3 years plus the purchase of a Hummer EV pick up, may be my last.
Update to original post from June 17th.
My dealer finally received a new motor for my truck on July 11th, they installed the motor and contacted me on July 15th to tell me that the new motor was no good and they will have to order another motor with no ETA. Supposedly, the new motor came with the wrong heads and this damaged the new motor, I am not sure how they can make this mistake.
Customer service has been zero help.

Has anyone lost a 6.2 on a 2024 or is the problem been corrected ?
I personally know of two 2024 6.2 that the lifters failed. From what I can research the lifters hasn’t changed in the 24’s.

I’ve had 3 different trucks over the last ten years with 6.2s and a total of 200k miles without a problem. So there is that…

I have the dealer do the oil changes on the recommended intervals. I do not tow much but also am not afraid to make the 6.2 grunt

Current truck is a ‘24 with 3k trouble free miles.

I went the other direction and had to trade my 2020 AT4 3.0 for my 23 AT4X 6.2. Over a month in the dealership shop and they could never fix the dreaded "service emissions system" code on the dash. This code puts the truck into severe limp mode. I was already gone for 3 weeks out of state working, and was ready to make the drive home (job was done) when this happened in Dec 2022.

In any case, I was gone 7 weeks (4+ extra than planned) and got a really good trade for my non-functioning 2020 AT4 3.0, plus a good discount on the new 23 AT4X.

No problems with the 3.0 really besides the emissions code they could never fix. No problems with the 6.2 engine in my 23 AT4X. I really liked the 3.0, but it stranded me with no fix in sight, so it had to go. The 6.2 is more fun to drive, although my lead foot has gotten a lot lighter over the years. As a contractor both engines have about the same torque (6.2 a lot more HP), so towing my job trailers is no problem with either engine.

According to the service manager at my dealership, the lifter issue has been resolved in the 23-24 model trucks, there is now a new failure. The story I am being told is that the new issue is with the material that the bearings are being made from gets brittle when it gets hot and then starts putting metal shavings into the oil, nothing good happens after this point.

I have experienced both lifter failure and now bearing failure, different experience with each. Again, according to the service manager, the new 24s being produced now have different supplier for bearings, who rally knows.

My 2023 lifters went and then they found a bent rod. Needed a new 6.2. I waited from June-August and was told it wouldn’t get fixed until end of this month. I went out and got another AT4 with the 3.0 babymax. Absolutely love it.
+1 for the max!

This thread is why I'd never touch a 1500 from GM. You can no longer buy a reliable brand new truck with a V8 in that class. The last one standing was the titan and now that is gone too.

Yep, that's part of the reason I switched to the HD. My 1500 could handle towing the boat with a few suspension mods but I just could not trust the motor and trans long term. I drive Tahoe's at work and we have had a few pop the 5.3L motors due to lifter failure at around 30-40k miles, and about one in five transmissions shudder like crazy. Yet my dad is still cruising around in his 2005 Z71 extended cab with 3 billion miles on it.

2005... Back when vehicles were reliable. Two years away from GM throwing out their reliability thanks to the communists at the EPA..
