87 89 or 91

I asked a GM guy about this at a truck event. I have the 6.2 and am finding lately there are times I am unable to get 91 octane. I have been driving GMC 6.2 trucks/SUVs since it came out in 2007 and never had trouble finding 91 or higher until recently. I hope this is not a trend? He said it was "just fine" to run 87 or 89 in my truck..."so you might have 400 hp as opposed to 420 so not a big deal". He did recommend when switching to a different octane run the tank as low as possible before filling up with the new octane. I have done this twice and really didn't notice a difference.

Good to know thanks for the info. Never had an issue finding premium fuel 91+

I have the 6.2L and have run 2 tanks of the 87. Didn't notice any drop in MPG but did notice a slight knock during hard acceleration or going up hill. I can tell a difference with lightly less power. 93 Octane costs $92 to fill up vs. $78 with 87....I may switch it up every 2-3 fill ups.

Thread had me wondering - read this - diesel fuel is denser than petrol and contains about 15% more energy by volume. I guess it's 107 then ;-)

Many threads about lifter failure/ engine problems, I figure I will give the engine what they say, best way to take care of it. Also, at 14 bucks a tank extra and a tank a week= $728 a year. Drive a 70k plus truck, seems to me no brainer to spend that little extra. Just Sayin🤔😳

You guys are all lucky, we are $2.10-2.25 a Liter here for 91-94 in good old stupid Canada, which works out to $8 a gallon or more. That's in Canadian but still would be over $6 US and they are saying it will be around $3 this summer.

Are you near a costco, last time I was there a couple of weeks ago it was 1.50 a liter for premium (@ 5.70 US a gallon). Looks like it's about 1.58 today. Peterborough Ontario

I’ve had a 6.2 since 2016 (Yukon Denali) and have always run 87 except when I’m towing here in the Rockies I upgrade to 91. Can’t say I notice the difference but it’s some comfort to know there’s more anti-knock cushion in the 91 when towing up a long mountain grade in summer heat.

Only had my 6.2 for not quite 4 months now. Have tried premium twice, didn't notice a difference. For the cost difference, I cant justify premium. I bet the truck will get a bit better mileage on premium, and probably has a little more power, but again, I didn't notice either being noticeably better when I filled up with premium twice. I don't hammer the pedal in my truck as I don't want to kill MPG. The 6.2 has tons of power if stepped in to, which is fun and good for passing, but rarely do I step into it much. No need.

The one thing that concerns me is lifter issues down the line since not using premium. But how would one know if that was the cause? Since I have been working in the midwest a lot the last year (live in Montana normally), all gas stations there have the e-mix fuel, which I know is not as good on the engine or for MPG or power. Never been a fan of the e-mix fuel, here in MT don't really see it. I just can't bring myself to spend 8+ bucks more on a tank for premium.

Costco here is about .10 sometimes .20 cents cheaper (just depends on when the gas stations change their prices), so that is usually where I try and fill up, but I'm just outside of Vancouver. Today it was $2.02 a liter for 91 at gas stations where I am, if I drive 20 minutes farther towards Vancouver it is $2.25 or more. We get shafted over here.

$1.469 today at Costco, Sherwood Park $5.56 a US Gal, time to change your green provincial government. ;)

I just returned from a trip from Florida to SC, NC, and into VA, a total of 2,100 miles on my 22 w/6.2. I was surprised that the average was 18.8 MPG overall. I have stayed with 91 always except for trying 89 a couple times. I really felt no difference but it seemed the mileage was slightly better with the 91. My common sense is if the engine is working harder with less octane, the MPG will be less. So, I have stayed with the higher priced gas. I don't baby the truck and run as hard as I can. Around town, the numbers are not there. One other comment is that the cruise control uses a good 1 MPG. The 6.2 becomes too reactive instead of my being proactive as a driver. Overall, I'm very happy with the whole truck.
