I went to the exhaust shop today to talk to them about upgrading the exhaust on my 2024 with a Flowmaster Super 44. I am curious about how this works with the active exhaust system. The shop did not instill much confidence in what they could do since it’s a new truck. They have never done one of these systems before. They seemed a bit nervous about doing and that makes me nervous. Has anyone upgraded the muffler with this system?

So the Flowmaster looks like it's just a muffler and not a whole new exhaust system right? Are you trying to keep the active exhaust feature? I'm not sure where exactly the valves are located within the stock exhaust system but I would think that as long as they're not removed, you could still use the system as normal.

Yea I was just going for the muffler swap. I watched a ton of videos about exhaust upgrades and the YouTube channel that I watched most mentioned more than once if you don’t take the actuators out, they rattle. Not sure if that’s a guarantee or just a likely scenario.

None of their videos were 24’s though. This local shop didn’t seem confident in their ability to do this upgrade. They were concerned about there being limited space for what they needed to do. I didn’t look under there but on the slightly older trucks there is a 42” stock muffler that is removed and often replaced with a section of pipe.

Are you looking to be able to still use the actuators? I'm really not familiar enough with the system to know for sure. The local shop does have a good point though. Maybe a GM dealer might have a better answer?

I thought it would be taken out based on the information provided in the videos. I think there are still some unknowns with this newer system. Perhaps a trip to the dealer is a good idea. I leave the truck in sport mode now because I like how it sounds. I just wanted to make it a little louder. Had Super 44’s on my old truck and it made a V6 sound much better. I thought that’s a great idea for a 6.2L, it should sound excellent.

I also drive in Sport mode because of the sound. I wouldn't mind a little more sound either but I think I'm going to leave it as is....for now. I'd be interested to see what you find out.

I added the GM Performance Kit from the dealership - Its a Borla, but I believe one of their more mild iterations. On start up, nice throaty roar, but nothing too outrageous. Approx 20 seconds, its really lays down and becomes a whisper. My 2018 Denali 6.2 sounded so much better and consistent. In my experience, prob not worth it unless the active exhaust (or whatever its called) can be bypass or defeated otherwise.

I just got my '24 AT4X 6.2L on Saturday and haven't had an opportunity to crawl under it to find to the actuator, but as long as it's not in the suitcase muffler, you should be fine to replace just the muffler and pipe. I actually did a FLowmaster Super 10 on my '21 AT4 6.2L and LOVED how it sounded. Check it out and see what you think.

Here is a picture of the muffler on my '24 with the 6.2. The muffler has 1 inlet and 2 outs. The outlet with the actuator lines up with the inlet, the other doesn't. I assume they line up as a pass through. After the 2 outlets they Y back together and Y again for each tail pipe.

So it may be possible to cut the pipe there and weld in another muffler and pipe. Now the wheels are turning in my head…..

Imo and if you investigate this further you best bet is to go with the borla exhaust in one of their touring sport or atak versions. You wont get drone and wont be disappointed. I have owned GM trucks for a long time and lots of people get very unhappy with just the muffler swap. Drone is huge with these trucks and will drive you crazy on road trips. If you don’t believe me check all the GM forums. Then again it’s an opinion and there are a minority who don't mind the drone or don't hear it, and it could be you. Trying to add my 2 cents before someone ends up double buying because they were not informed.

Hey there jakrbt, your 21' with the flow master Super 10 sounds great. I have been thinking about putting the same muffler on for a while and I have a question. I currently have a 22' 6.2 with a muffler delete that I have been rockin' for about a year and a half. It sounds great but I find there is a little too much drone in the cab when pulling a trailer or at certain rpm's. Did you find there was much drone with the super 10 muffler? any chance you have any more pictures or videos of the exhaust from your 21'? Thanks in advance for your time. If anyone can recommend a muffler that will keep a fairly aggressive sound but help lose the drone, it would be appreciated.

Sounds great!

I don’t think the exhaust for the 6.2L has changed that much through the years and Ive seen countless videos where the flappers are cut out of the system and it is fine. Plus…if you do replace the exhaust with a cat back system from Borla or any of the other many exhaust system available, those flappers are removed anyways. So Im pretty sure it wouldn’t be an issue to get rid of them.

Yep my last couple 6.2 had flappers and removed with Borla exhaust. Like I said some people cant hear or dont care if there is a drone. I drive long distance and it is unbearable to my ears. If you have the wrong ratio you will get drone mild to obnoxious. I like loud outside and quiet inside.
