Use of engine heater during inside winter storage

I always had mine set on a timer. Never stored long term. But if I would leave at 5AM it would turn on at 3.

Read your manual, I know the 3.0 is not supposed to be plugged in above zero F or so because it will actually be over temp on startup otherwise…

Thanks TX. Have 6.2. Manual only references outdoor usage and 4hr. Period

Unless it’s crazy cold don’t even worry about it. The new trucks 2020+ have a temperature sensor in the plug and do nothing unless below 0°F/-18°C.
Owners manual-Driving and Operating (Diesel)- Engine Heater.

Makes me miss my LML in the winter.

Why is there a stupid round plug in with an adapter cord for a block heater. Plus the plastic guard that already has one broken tit.. Stupid idea. BTW, I'm in Canada and use it often..If you leave the cover off and it plugs with slush and snow..

LOL, again I miss the older trucks where you zip-tied the cable wherever you wanted (tow hook) and plugged it in to warm the truck anytime.

No crappy bumper plug to break or special connector on the lowest possible point of the truck to get accidentally damaged. It’s like GM tests out the dumbest ways to change something and the most idiotic wins.

Block heater location? Can we make them plug it in under the truck? Maybe!
What about the lowest part of the bumper where it will definitively hit stuff and if there’s snow and ice it will screw it up? YES

Should we use a standard AC receptacle? HELL NO
What about another cord that has CONNECTORS nobody has ever seen before? PERFECT

Has anyone else had any issues with the block heater working at all? I've tested the block heater plug and it is passing power to the truck, however after 24 hours the truck is still sitting at a 7 degree coolant reading. Currently just crank no start.

Fuel was treated with winterizer before the temps dropped and ran to cycle it through. Started no issues first crank at 31 degree coolant reading, but now that the temperature outside has sat below 0 for two days she doesn't wanna budge.

Any suggestions?

Uhhh, what truck?

Yeah, I have a '22 L5P, first winter with it, plugged it in as any other diesel on the farm. Worked good. Then one morning it wouldn't fire, plugged in. Warmed up to around 15° and fired up. All kinds of lights, ran like shit, back fired out of the air cleaner. Service manager said it sounds like a ground. Limped it to the dealer on a Sunday morning. Tuesday they called with bad news, block heater connection at block caught fire, melted most of the 12v engine harness. No idea how it made it to service...

My fault, thought I had the signature saved with the truck info. 2024 2500 AT4 Diesel.

That's definitely a bad time though. How long did that mess take to get back to you?

Following your photos I went out and traced the line from the plug on the fender all the way to the harness. It's sending power all the way to the block, just not heating anything from what I can tell. Sitting at just over 24 hours plugged in and still won't run for longer than 10 seconds. No melt issues or fire so far. Decided to unplug and just wait for the truck to thaw naturally just incase.

Have already checked the fuel at the filter for cloudiness and gelling, neither present there so I guess I will be making a run to the dealer to get this block heater checked before the next cold blast comes through.

Good idea on leaving it unplugged.

Long story. 7 months. Wiring harness was on national backorder. I bought the complete harness on ebay. Train derailment in ohio had a bunch of new 2500/3500 heading to dealers. Strictland auto dismantlers was scraping them. Bought from ins of bnsf.

Here is the doner truck..

7 months! I can't even imagine. How'd the warranty fair with that? They chock it up to manufacturer defect?

Yep. 8000 miles new. GM sent engineers out. Covered under bumper to bumper. I paid for the harness, just to get truck back for post spraying.

GM reimbursed me the 7 months worth of payments, gave me a 3 year service contract and extended the bumper to bumper warranty, except for paint, for 60 months.
