Hello all,

Looking forward to your ideas/thoughts.

On 9/23/2025, while driving home from work, my 2025 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 w/ 3.0L Duramax stalled unexpectedly and with no warnings on the dash. Mileage at the time is 2,122.

After it had stalled, a message alerted on the display saying "press start button again" while in motion. I pressed the start button and nothing happened. I was able to coast out of the main traffic and stop in a safe spot (thankfully).

Once stopped, I placed the truck into park and then tried restarting it. There is power to the truck but when you hit the start button, everything in vehicle goes dark. The engine does not attempt to turnover and there is no sound of the starter. There is a click noise when you press the start button similar to when a battery is dead. After a few seconds, power comes back on inside. If the process is repeated, the same result occurs.

Also, while sitting there, attempted to shift the truck into neutral to see if it would start from there. However, when I attempt to change the gear, there is a message that pops up saying "conditions are not met to shift gears". I did have my seltbelt on as well as the brakes. I then proceeded to contact GMC roadside service and it was towed to the dealership.

Forward to today (9/26/2025), dealer texted and said they confirmed the no start/loss of power and are going to start repairs by replacing the starter and battery, once the parts are received.

This is where we stand right now.

If someone should have questions, please let me know and I will clarify it the best I can.

Thanks in advance

Mine stalled when I accidently hit the start/stop key while driving in the mountains in BC. I was reaching out to switch exhaust brake on or off and hit the start key instead. It took me a few moments to realize I was coasting downhill in gear, limited steering and brake control, before realizing I had to shift to neutral then hit the start key and it worked thankfully before I hit a bend in the narrow mountian road; could have been disastrous. Now I need to 'watch it' and am also aware the truck can be turned off with the ignition on/off key, even while moving/travelling in gear.

Welcome.

A starter won't make the engine die while running.

I'm popping popcorn waiting to hear the results.

Curious what it is! Battery or alternator? When was it built? I’ve heard of two new trucks that sat on dealers lots too long and experienced weird things that went away with new batteries.

Here I’m afraid I’m going to pop my “tailgate” button when I reach or throw something in the compartment below it 🤣 horrible location for that button!

Although the Tailgate opening button is disabled while the truck is running plus a dashboard alert only if the inner tailgate is open. theres nothing, no alert etc. if you commence driving with an open tailgate or if it somehow opens while driving. I designed and built my own remote 'tailgate open' alarm and its been invaluable,

I'm thinking same thing as yourself. I imagine the starter is being replaced for an unrelated issue to the stalling. Possible tested to be a sticking solenoid/bendix that caused the battery to fail. I too am curious.

Hopefully the owner gets his vehicle back today as starter and battery are a common part and easy replacement.

The click and all electrical going out when attempting to restart was due to the 60A starter fuse blowing. My guess is that they are replacing the starter because they found the blown fuse. Only thing I know that will blow that fuse is if there is a condition preventing the starter from operating. Given the stall before I would be suspicious that it's the starter itself. When mine spun crank bearings and shut off it blew the starter fuse when I attempted to restart, same conditions as described. Of course we have different engines.

Side note on shifting if anyone should be unlucky enough to experience the same: after you attempt to restart, wait until after everything goes black and a few seconds later the dash powers back up, you can then shift to neutral. (at least this worked on a pre-refresh)

I had this exact same issue, which was totally unsafe. It was at the shop for 40+ days. They first misdiagnosed the problem, which took 10 days, then they identified the problem, which needed a part that was on back order. Got it back, and it was leaking oil all over the place, back in the shop for another eight days...I'm in the middle of a vehicle buy back with GM via Lemon Law...good times....

Hello all,

Just got off the phone with service department, telling me the truck is ready to be picked up today.

This is what they think happened on this...

The truck started fine but the starter stayed engaged while driving.

Do to the starter staying engaged while driving, it eventually burned up. When it did this, it over loaded the electrical system causing the master/mega fuse next to the battery to be blown.

After the dealership replaced the starter and fuse, the truck was able to start and be driven. The battery was not replaced as they said there was no issues with it.

I am only the messenger 😂🤣😅

Update: battery was replaced as well as they said it tested bad.
