Each update does something different. After it installs it usually tells you what it updated. For the most part, you'll never really notice any changes. Every update is sent out to ensure your truck is up to date with the latest software, bug fixes and improved functionality so that there are no issues down the road and theoretically so you don't need to visit the dealer. When I had a failed update and took it to my dealer, they didn't charge me for it. I'm still under warranty though. What does the update do for our trucks and what happens is we don't bother with it? I'm sure the dealer will want to charge us for help with it
When my update finished, it said that it updated the TCM which would be the transmission control module. I have only driven it a couple of miles so far and haven't noticed any difference yet.
