My 2023 HD is wired for trailer camera - has the rca style jack at the back bumper. Is my only option to go with the GM system or has anyone installed a aftermarket system on their trailer that worked with the truck? At time of order my salesman implied I could just add a camera to the trailer and attach to the truck and be good to go.

thanks in advance

As far as I know, the GM camera is the only one compatible, but do some research before you drop $700 on it. I’ve read it won’t work for the invisible trailer views on trailers over 30’. For longer trailers you have to lie about some dimensions, making the image stitching and perspective a little wonky.

I am also looking for a aftermarket camera that will plug into the back bumper and will work with the trucks factory display unit. I dont care about the transparent trailering feature, I just want it for backing up etc. not looking to spend $650 from GM on something that should be $150-200 though.

just a side note for the GM camera - correct, it is not designed for trailers over so many inches long (but still works if you are close to that length) 2. if you have a enclosed trailer with a pull down ramp, the camera is useless for the transparent feature as the camera needs to be mounted 4 inches above your where your tailgate camera is located - so the middle of the ramp door on the back of the trailer... all well and good if you dont mind having a cable running down the middle of your trailer (and also if it clears the ground when you let the ramp down, this I dont know)

So far, I haven’t read that anyone has found a camera aftermarket that works with the truck.

Unless you make a connector yourself or unplug from the backside fakra connector, GM does not sell their plug separately.

I have it mounted on the ramp door of a 8x20’ 7’tall enclosed trailer and it works. It has plenty of clearance on flat ground and make sure not to open it where I’d crush the camera on an uneven surface.

I really like the camera but GM really were idiots with the prograde trailering system. Only box style trailers work with all the features is annoying. I’d love to have trailer length indicator on my boat but setup as a boat- nope. Wireless magnetic camera would have been way to smart. The camera system doesn’t work with fifth wheel and gooseneck setups, you have to set them up as a bumper pull.

Make a connector? Does this mean the aftermarket cameras will work if you can splice in a connector? I agree, the parts dept gave me the price and I was taken aback by the price for a relatively simple device.

If you login to the GMC website you can apply multiple discounts at the checkout + any MyGMC rewards points you may have.

I was able to purchase a camera from GMC for $398 w/ tax.

I have not looked into the camera system that much. Believe I read somewhere that GM cameras operate on a unique 6.5v system.

Ultimately I went with the GMC camera and I’m glad I did. It’s complete, with the cable, shroud around the cable, nice connector to hook into the back of the truck, even press on mounts to tie wrap the cable in place as you route it to the back of the trailer. The price difference between a GMC camera and a home made one would disappear once you got all the little items needed to complete the job. Ok, but how does it work? Awesome!
