Hey, I’m still new to this heavy duty diesel configuration so I have a question to pose…
We were towing home a used fifth wheel that we recently purchased on a nice 12 Hour road trip.
I was in the process of passing a transport truck and got a notice on the dash that our speed was tapped out just over 150km/h. Is this really what the factory governor set to or is it because I was towing a trailer? Seems a little low to me based on all the other GM vehicles I’ve owned; but maybe l’m just an overzealous Canuck not used to just how much power I’m dealing with now. 🤪

Thoughts?

Usually the speed limiters are set based on the tire ratings, which vary based on which wheel/tire the truck was optioned with. I’m with the others in thinking that when towing, in traffic, away from home, and with the family it’s probably best to stay within the tires capacity. You may still be exceeding the trailer tire ratings.

First thought - Dang man. Towing a used 5th wheel home at that speed seems fuggin ridiculous to me. Second thought, tell this guy to not do that anymore and get a sports car with speed rated tires.

Sounds not too smart and extremely dangerous.. why would you be doing that speed even without a trailer? It's a truck not a race car..

Aww.. I remember my first boat, bouncing behind as I was flying down the highway. Looked in the rear view mirror and couldn't figure out why there weren't cars behind me.. Last time I ever pulled anything that fast.. we all gotta learn at least no one got hurt.

And to add insult to injury it was used. In other words, he knew nothing about the mechanical condition of said trailer or even if the bearings had been greased properly recently. Jeeees

Well folks thanks for the obvious feedback. 😜

In my defense, I was only doing 60 when I started the pass and got the notification when I pulled back in 30 seconds later, thus the surprise at how quickly it got there, as much as the notification itself. The truck pulls hard at speed… lesson learned.
And for what it’s worth, knowing we had a 12hr run home, the trailer was thoroughly inspected and roadtested with its newer upgraded suspension, bearings and new tires… although we did exceed their speed rating by ~10mph for those 30 seconds, so… note to self. 🤪
As far as the truck, I’m running S-rated k03’s, so no issues there. I don’t care if it’s a truck, a Jeep or a Corvette; if it’s not designed to run at 100mph, it’s not worth buying. 😎
(Okay, maybe I’m pushing it with the Jeep…)

Anyway, appreciate your thoughts… was a fun read!
