Yes its a good fit and serves my purpose of providing solid protection and primarily a perfect non-slip surface for our travel luggage, presents and even a frozen turkey once, etc. mostly at the tailgate end of the standard 6'-10" bed which is still pretty long for me.

I love it to. It's heavy and dense and keeps things in the back from sliding around. It also acts a cushion for heavier items like my generator.

I will probably get a rubber mat, but in the meantime I did what I always did: buy several concrete mixing tubs and secure with bungees in the bed..... sort of a "cellular" divided cargo transport. Got 6 of them, different sizes to fit between wheel wells and not. Put 12 additional "Bull" rings in bed for a mosaic of bungees. Mud stuff in one, clean groceries in another, greasy metal crap in another, large birthday cake in another, etc. They are super light, they stack, they hose down, cheap to replace, and...... incredibly can be used to mix concrete! Keeps contents dry as bed floor gets wet in rain even with tonneau. Tubs float on water and sled across mud if you attach ropes to pull them to a wetland campsite (I don't do that lately) or for gardening. Makes a passable snow sled.

Without rubber mat, tubs slide around easily to rearrange, so I would want a hard rubber surface mat in my case, with not a lot of grip. So is the GM version a hard rubber?

Yes hard rubber, no sliding around. Sounds like you want hard plastic, like a drop-in bed liner.
