On my to the dump to dispose of 12,500 lbs of roof materials yesterday, I lose trailer brakes while heading into a hard turn. Was at managable speed, so as soon as my truck was pushed out of the turn I released the brakes and I was able to swerve away from the wall in just enough time. I really thought I was going through that wall (in some fashion) or be swung around from the trailer weight after that maneuver, but I remained inline, made the full turn, wiped my ass, then hit the dump...cautiously. Called dealer immediately after dropping the trailer off at my shop and explained my issue. They told me to bring it in immediately. They are performing the below recalls this morning first thing.

I did have some warning light feedback from a couple different trailers like signal lights were out, brake lights not working, but after stopping to check the things it claimed, they were all working properly. Then the brake issue 😬Hopefully this new module helps remedy all of this. They mention if trailer being pulled has more battery charge than the truck, it causes this. Makes sense as I trickle charge them each night. 🤷

Anyway, I'll report back today. I will hook it up to the same trailer and test it out. Empty of course, until I know for sure. That feeling of being pushed by your load is fuggin scary!

Wow. Glad you are ok.

I knew about the radio recall but not the trailer brakes.

I cant imagine a freshly charged battery showing more volts than the truck electrical system with engine running.

Thanks!

That's the only part that confuses me. I guess at times of fluctuation, it could dip below, then fault out. No idea...

Had the Trailer Brakes recall fixed during my last visit to the dealer. I'll probably wait for the radio/software update until the next service.

guess i better get busy before i hook up that 16k 5th wheel next month

Just picked up the truck. I'll do some testing soon with a trailer.

Does anyone know what the serial data gateway module and radio reprogram even fixes?
I had an email and also checked the app to confirm it.
The truck battery is at risk of draining if an OTA (Over the Air) update happens to the infotainment system.

I had the same thing happen to me while hauling a fifth wheel from Montgomery AL. to Richmond VA. a little over a month ago. Trailer brakes cut out about 30 minutes into the, roughly 10 hour, drive and started working about the last hour sometime. I had literally just bought the camper so thought that was the issue and called the camper dealer. As I am working out of my home state, Louisiana, they said to bring it in when I return. Imagine my surprise to learn it is most likely my AT4, LOL. Now I will be calling the local GMC dealer before heading home for sure

“Well Alrighty Then”
Good to know since I’m currently pulling a 25k fifth wheel as are many others out here.
Is there anyway to know when an over the air update is in progress????
Common GM ! This could be disastrous for a lot of people on the road …

I just checked with GM. Apparently there are two separate recall/updates that apply to certain VIN’s. Some have both and some have one or the other.
One is for the module/over the air. Apparently if the truck is on but not running and an update begins it can indeed use the battery for the updates to complete and deplete power from the battery.
The second is indeed a brake issue. I’m not informed on the details of the brake issue but it’s a separate recall. I was asked for my vin and they identified that personally I only need the over the air.
I would encourage all of us to call and get the specific requirements for your truck. I’m hoping the person I spoke to at the dealership was accurate with this info.
Perhaps some of us have both problems attached to our vin and both problems can happen creating the impression that they are related.
Post what you find out.
Thank You !

Just to let all know …. The over the air module update is a 2.5 hour service so call and make an appointment. We all know it’s a week or so to get anything scheduled and there might be a rush of us looking to get an appointment wherever you are.

Just checked GMC does not list the brake controller recall for mine but the radio module is. Manufactured 04/24

Edited to change manufacturing year from 2004 to 2024.

Just had my recall/update done today. Took almost 3 hours according to the service tech.

Also have had this incredibly annoying rattle in my dash, sounded like a screw rattling around in a plastic bowl right under where the HUD camera sits. Unbelievably annoying. They tore into the dash and found the piping/tubing/whatever it is that connects to the driver side air vents had come loose. No wonder the AC/heat on the drivers side felt weak! Rattle fixed also, thankfully.
