Noise when shutting off

You are good to go. That is the variable vane actuator for the turbo. gm engineers thought it will help to keep them from locking up, by full stroking them to keep soot away. The rust is normal for a turbo. Too hot to keep paint on the hot side, just like exhaust manifolds.
 

Thanks for the response. This is my first time owning a diesel. Another question as far as DEF is there a certain brand, quality that I should be using or are they all the same?
 

Supposed to be the same. All 32% urea and balance of distilled water. I use the blue def, not the platinum version.
