I'm a new member to this forum. I ordered an F350 Platinum 7.3L Tremor 20 months ago and still don't have it. I'm done with that process! I've switched gears and am about to buy a 2024 AT4 HD. I put about 20k miles per year on my truck (80% work/commute and 20% towing). I have a 30ft Airstream witch is about 8,800 lbs loaded plus gear and a family of 4 in the truck. I currently drive a 2019 RAM 1500 Limited HEMI long bed which does the job, but I need more payload.

I'm trying to decide between gas or diesel on the AT4 and if I need to upgrade to the max tow package on the 2500 in order to help future proof the truck for bigger trailers or larger jobs down the road. Also, will the upgraded front springs package hurt the ride much when I'm not totowing? I found a new 2024 AT4 HD 2500 diesel on the ground with that option.

Any advise would be much appreciated. I'm excited to be a part of this forum.
 

a 2500 HD gas will pull that trailer. After all, you have been pulling it with a 1/2 ton. so the question is, do you want to pay 10k more for a Duramax for more towing that you don't need ATM or save the 10k? only you can answer.

PS, i belive the Max towering package requires the Duramax. So again, do you need to spend 10k+ now or in the near future?
 

My 23 F350 order was dropped by Ford. Two days later I ordered a 3500 AT4. When I ordered the Ford back in January it had the 10 speed while GM didn’t. I think I’ll be very happy with the decision to go to GMC
 

I also came from a Limited Ram 1500 towing a travel trailer to a AT4 HD. I miss the Ram, but I have been plenty happy with the GMC, so no regrets. I have the diesel and the power is amazing! The 10 speed makes it drive incredibly smooth, even when towing. Only issue I have is parking because the turn radius is pretty wide compared to the short bed Ram, (I have the standard bed now).

One thing I'd say is if you want to future proof yourself, then go with the 2500 with the max trailer pkg (and 5th wheel prep for good measure). It's the equivalent of the 3500 that I have, it just keeps you from paying more in taxes on some states.

You don't need the front spring upgrade unless you plan on doing front bumpers & winch or a camper on top of the truck. The stock front shocks are more than enough for regular trailer and 5th wheel towing.
 

I have a 2022 AT4 2500 was the gas motor, and I tow a 1987 Airstream 32 ft (8200 lbs). This truck is rated to tow 14.5k on the hitch, so I am well within the range, and it does an amazing job. Your 2024 will have the Allison 10 speed, where I have 6 speed transmission. I average 10 mpg towing (usually 65-68 mph) and 13 mpg when not towing. I’m calculating these numbers manually since the computer is about 1 mpg high. On longer trips, I have close to 1000 lbs loaded in the truck including my topper and Cargo Glide.

I think either motor will pull the trailer fine. The big advantage with diesel will be the range when towing, diesel exhaust brake, easier to fill up when towing (diesel pumps normally have more room, or fill up with the semis), also it's nice to leave the AC/heat running while filling up. However, there is a big up front cost to have those features!
