Pleased how this turned out. I bought the lights off of Amazon for $60, then realized I would need to turn them on from the dash, which is inconvenient. So, I purchased a momentary switch, which is brass, waterproof, and had a rubber boot so it wouldn't mar the step. That way, the lights come on when you lower the step, and shut off when it's raised. Now there's no need to turn the on from the dash. But wait a minute...what if I add a photocell to the circuit so they won't come on during the day. Hmmm, checked Amazon and found one for $13, along with braided wire sleeve to make it all professional looking. Grabbed power from the 7 pin trailer plug and it works great! I did find out a few things about photocells. First, when I drop the step, it powers the circuit and the lights come on, day or night. And second, if it's daytime, it takes about 10 seconds for the photocell to react and shuts off the lights. I thought it would be instantaneous but I can live with 10 seconds. At night they will just stay on until you close the step. The only hole I had to drill was in one of the plastic covers to mount the momentary switch (larger red circle). The photocell is mounted in an empty hole on the right side hinge of the secondary tailgate (workspace shelf as some call it), on the left side of that hinge (smaller red circle).
I will probably wire in the 2 bed lights as well, and add an on-off switch for flexibility.

Nice work but I was under the impression that using the supplied wiring harness the lights turned on automatically? Is that the difference between the Amazon and oem? Or does the oem not even turn on automatically?

I watched a YouTube video where the light kit purchased from the dealer was installed, and he hit the bed lights switch on the dash to illuminate.

yeah....I found "These LED lights will turn on when you press cargo/bed light switch button on the dashboard"

Ok, I don't have my at4 yet so I'll have a bit to decide how I'm going to hook them up. I like your implentation, but I'm going to take it as a challenge to find a "cooler" way :) I'll keep all posted.

Very nice job! Impressive

btw, what tonneau cover did you go with? do you like it?
Went with the Truxedo Sentry CT. The BAK Revolver X2 was bare aluminum on the back side which ruled that one out. The Gator and the Truxedo looked identical, and since I've had great luck with 2 previous Truxedo Low Pro soft covers, seemed logical to go with this. Totally happy with it. The only place water gets in is the crack between the main tailgate and the "work space" part of the tailgate. The "helping arm" that swings up to help get into the bed hits the side rail of the tonneau, but adding 3/8" spacers between the arm and bed eliminates that.

You have a link for the switch you used? Or brand/model? Looks good and very convenient!

Referring to you post several steps back ; if the photocell were in a spot exposed to sunlight full time the delay would be very close to zero. But probably no good spot to make that happen

I've read that the delay is due to the quality of the photo cell, and also read that photo cells can have a delay designed into them. I'm no sparky, but I imagine mine is due to the quality (or lack there of) of the photo cell. I opened the step and hit the photo cell with a 5K LED flashlight a few inches away, and it still took about 8 seconds to shut off. I'm OK with that.

So...how did you cut the light wiring to add the momentary switch?
And doesn't the interior light have to be turned on to get ANY power to the lights?

It's been a while, and don't remember. I have to dig into the tailgate this weekend for unrelated reasons, so I'll check it out and post a pic. Still works perfectly. The lights work when I drop the step, even if the truck is off. Pretty sure I pulled power from the trailer plug.

Thanks much...
