So I got to thinking and decided why should I buy a K&N or S&B air intake just for the noise when I can modify the stock air box. The K&N pulls air from the top and is actually pulling in hot air directly from the engine bay. The S&B pull air from the driver side and have a square plug that can be pulled for more air. So, I thought why not make a cut out like the side plug on the S&B air box and just have air get pulled through there while also providing more air/turbo noise. I even did an in garage air flow test with my blower and a sheet of plastic to verify that the air would flow directly to the air filter and not out the factory air duct. After the air flow test was completed I added mesh screening on the inside and outside of the air box with a filter from a shop vacuum in between the two mesh screens. This is to prevent minimal dust and debris from getting into the air box.

Now for added performance I add a CFT Intake pipe. I also intend to add a Stillen Air Scoop in the near future for more direct air flow into the air box.

This is exactly what I was thinking! Kudos on making it work.

I was thinking about doing something similar but maybe some tweaks, haven’t put much thought in yet.

How’s it working so far?

It has great sounding turbo noise at low rpm when paired with a better breathing air filter. If you a k&n filter then I recommend also buying a k&n filter cleaner spray to remove the oil and run it as a dry filter so you won’t ruin the maf sensor with oil contamination. Also, make sure to Disable you air filter life or else you’ll get a “check system” indication that can only be removed by the dealership or someone with a high dollar scan tool.

I bought a Stock air box to modify because I didn’t want to modify the original air box and it not work as I expected it to. What additional modifications to the air box did you have in mind?

How do I disable air filter life?
