My daughter plays ECNL soccer and we are in the middle of the college ID camp craziness. So I drive lots of miles for soccer... for example 2023 has 9500mi and I work in my dinning room. Typically when we travel I have a large number of small bags for my camera's and soccer bags and school bags and computer bags., my non-dad hobbies are auto-crossing and shooting. And the red bin in the picture is always in the truck and has jumper cables, gloves, recovery stuff, an extra rain coat, boots... So I always have a lot of smallish, heavy, non easily securable things with me that have a tendency to slide around in the bed, so the fragile stuff ends up in the cab; not a problem if 2 of us go, but it gets cramped with 3. If I didn't haul lawn stuff and do dump runs and all of the other truck stuff I would throw in a bed rug or a Decked system and be done with it but I do.
So I want a solution that is easily removable, not so specific that it can support soccer dad support gear, photography, autocross and shooting. Ideally at least an area the size of my red bin is accessible from outside the bed and I still need to have access to at least the depth of the chairs.
This is image shows what I have come up with so far. About 1/2 the bed covered in plywood. The front to back movement would be constrained by the wheel well and lateral movement by a couple of runners in the channels. then add couple of cleats for the Milwaukee pack-out units, and keep a space for my trusty red bin that I would constrain with a lip around its base. Then it is just a matter of getting bins to drop bags in or modding pack-out boxes to match specific tasks.
If you have any thoughts or better solutions before I take the time and materials to put it together I'd love to hear them?
