JB4 Tuner Feedback…

I can’t speak specifically about their tuners for Chevy/GMC’s, but about 10 years ago I had the second generation JB4 tuner on my BMW 335i (twin turbo online 6). It was a very well thought out and refined product back then, so I can only imagine it’s even better now.

So it looks like I have to provide my own feedback on this post I guess! :)

I picked up the JB4 tuner for my truck; 2023 GMC Canyon AT4 HO, Pedal Commander and nothing else. I live in CA so you can just imagine the fckery I had go through to get this to my doorstep. Uggh, CA.

I’ve had it installed for 3 weeks now so my impression/experience is pretty solid. If it craps out on me in a month I’ll come back here and update my feedback. So here it is…

1) The install instructions are terrible. The images are NOT for a Canyon and they assume you know how to connect the wires. I’m not new to mods but as I was installing it I was thinking there is no way your average online buyer is just going to instinctively know how to connect the wires. I compared these instructions to those I’ve used for K&N, Gibson, Hypertech, 12voltsolutions and they are lacking.
The instructions say you can install the “optional” OBDII sensor for better login. Well, you also need to install it to get the app gauges working!!! They dont tell you that and it’s not listed on the site. So if you want to see the gauges working while using the app ($29) you have to get the wireless connection AND connect the OBDII sensor.

2) The harness and connectors are good quality, however, for my truck the harness is about 6” too short. You cannot reach the intercooler connector routing the harness as they described in the instructions. You’ll have to run it through the front of the frame vs along the pillar as they describe. Maybe that works for other years/models, but not mine.

3) The wireless connection cable needs to be longer as well. The cable is to short to properly place the communicator with all the “make sure” requirements. They need to add another 12” to that cable. You can see how I installed it the pic.

4) Map 0: this is a tune with the factory settings. Most noticeable was the smoothness of the idle, the truck feels like it’s not on! Driving is improved by keeping it in a higher gear and not the low end of the range which crates that bogging. When you get on the gas you can feel throttle gains across all gears. Really nice.

5) Map 1: very nice and you definitely feel the increase in performance over Map0. Idle remains quiet. Feels like it’s running a the higher end of the gear and throttle response is improved. When you hit the gas it really gets it, Very nice/smooth acceleration across all gears.

Would I get it again? I would. I think the performance gains and the change in the truck is worth it. They can make some improvements in the product and instructions like I stated above, but all-in-all I’m happy with it and would recommend it.

Happy to answer any questions for this make/model if you have them.

2/26/24 update…

Logged a few passes and threw a check engine light P1101. Sent logs to JB4 to get some assistance. That process of reaching anyone to help you is frustrating to say the least. I’m working with Terry and I think they don’t read the email in whole - he provides half answers or doesn’t directly answer the questions I have. They also respond assuming everyone who uses their product is a tuner - we’re not. The customer support has been the most frustrating experience thus far. I’m feeling like they really didn’t vet this on the 2023 Canyon to be honest.
