Hey all! Just purchased a 2024 AT4 6.2L last week. So far I've been enjoying it for the most part. Most of my driving has been around town. However, my family and I took a short trip this weekend and the passengers in the back complained quite a bit about how bumpy of a ride it was. I also felt a little uncomfortable in the front but not terrible. I didn't ride in the back but my daughter said it was like constant little bumps even when we weren't on bumpy/bad roads.

I understand that an at4 isn't necessarily going to be the best in terms of ride comfort compared to an SUV (for example) but has anybody else had this complaint from family and been able to fix it? I see a lot of mention of new shocks (in particular Bilstein 5100) as helping the ride but very few explain what the complaint was before other than the back of the truck getting sideways and it doesn't seem like that's what my issue is. I'd like to hear from others that experienced a similar complaint as mine and if anything worked for them. I'd hate to trade it in already and lose my butt on what is basically a new vehicle if I can get it fixed but also don't want to put even more money in to it and not help resolve the issue.

Edit: Just wanted to add I did see the great write up at https://www.at4forum.com/threads/bilstein-5160-and-6112-shock-review-for-2023-at4.1563/ which says the ride is much better for them now but also it says the ride comfort is the same or a bit less than before so not sure the improved ride they are referring to will help in my situation. I'm not experienced enough to get the difference between ride quality and comfort.

While I don't have a 1500 sierra, speaking from the 2500 side I can tell you that rancho makes $#** shocks. Lots of complaints about them online over various platforms. I have a kryptonite stage 3 leveling kit with fox shocks coming in, in the next few weeks to help with the bumpy ride. Bilstein makes good stuff with budget in mind. Icon makes great shocks. KYB makes good stuff too.

If you're looking for ultimate comfort you're going to have to shell out money on various suspension upgrades that'll run you thousands to include throwing your rancho shocks where they belong - trash.

I would give this a month and ask your family again how they feel. You might find they get used to it. At the end of the day gotta remember it's a truck not an Escalade with cloud up in the air style comfort ride.

Edit forgot to mention tires also contribute to ride, depending what tires you're running, the air pressure etc.

Thanks for the reply. Definitely seems the rancho shocks are crap from everything I’ve read. I’m more than willing to shell out for new ones (Bilstein or others) if it’ll help. I’m just not sure what exactly new shocks will help with. Will it help dampen that bumpy ride in the back or is it mostly just going to help keep it more stiff on turns etc? That’s the part I don’t know enough about.

I didn't see what size wheels you have but 20s may be a little harsher than 18s. Also, have you checked the tire pressure to make sure the tires aren't overinflated?

I have the 20” wheels. They were at ~40psi. Checked the door jamb sticker last night after returning from our trip and it said 35psi so I let a bit of air out. Haven’t tested it today yet but will tonight. Not sure it’ll be much different from 40 though.

Yea, that will help quite a bit. Depending on the ride they are expecting, you may still want to swap out the shocks to get the ride quality you are looking for.

Years ago I had a bad tire pressure guage and overinflated my wife's tires by about 8 psi. I thought I was going to bounce out of the car going over speed bumps at Home Depot. I would get the pressure right first.

Welcome.

I can tell you changing out the Ranchos for the Bilsteins on a 2500 helped improve the ride.

Back in the obs day, gm used Bilsteins on the Z71.

Haha yeah, brought them down to 35 last night. Will see if it's any better tonight. Didn't think 5 psi would matter much but sounds like it'll help at least a bit.

Same with me, but with a 2500.
My front were 65 and rear were 88, door sicker and the app recommended 59 front and 70 rear.
But based on recommendations on here, i lowered my front to 55 and rear to 65, and felt a difference (i think)

I've been driving trucks and SUVs for ages, so a truck ride feels the same to me no matter what, hehe
(my father used to have a 92 F-250, with one of those Gem Top metal truck caps with dual doors, that softened the ride a lot but still felt like a truck)

Yeah, those door sticker pressures are for max towing of course. Lowering mine helped. I'm still looking for how low I can go without triggering TPMS.

Well, it's either buy tools/equipment or pay more tax money to the irs. 😃

It will relearn the truck where the sensors are when you rotate tires, but the $11 dollar tool works just as good. So, no, it doesn't do much else, unless you need new sensors programmed to the truck. Or if you run a complete tire/wheel/sensor combination for winter, you need to reprogram the tpms module every swap.

Wait, what is this tax you speak of? I get TPMS warnings from time to time but have never heard of a tax resulting from this.
