Is there anyway to turn on high idle when the truck is running? I know when i use my remote start it will idle higher, but i cant seem to figure out how to do it while running.
You'll have to make sure you have the setting turned on in the head unit. Under comfort and convenience I belive. Is there anyway to turn on high idle when the truck is running? I know when i use my remote start it will idle higher, but i cant seem to figure out how to do it while running.
Under Climate and Air Quality, you can turn off and on... Rapid Heat-Elevated Idle. If truck is already warmed up, it won't elevate. Also it seems like it has to be below freezing to work.Is there anyway to turn on high idle when the truck is running? Thank you for explaining this. GM made this WAY too confusing. I read the Duramax supplemental cover to cover, they could have explained this better. I have a couple questions:He is confused as most salespeople. You would think it would be a requirement to read the owners manual to be in sales. And understand what they read. And for God's sake, don't make a youtube video to prove you don't.
From the GMC 2024 HD diesel supplement manual, page 9...

There are 2 systems here, that people get confused about. There is an Elevated idle that has to be enabled in the infotainment screen.
Then there is a High idle switch that costs an extra $200 dollars. Why gm can't name it Fast idle on the window sticker or call it High idle in the manual.
Either way the fast/high idle does NOT/can NOT be enabled in the infotainment system.
The Elevated idle can not be initiated by the cruise set roller. It is controled by the ECM. No user control, 'cept for turning it on or off in the infotainment system. Won't work above 32° or engine temp above 165°.
The High/fast idle can only be manually turned on with the cruise set roller whenever the user wants. I use it when parked to get more air moving across the condenser when the air temp is above 90°. It can not be initiated by a remote start.
I would say the no idling rule only applies to idling in the 600 rpm idle - not under high idle. High idle is meant for idling for this exact purpose - idling for extended periods of time - it keeps your oil pressure up and flowing as opposed to settling down and causing wear and tear.Thank you for explaining this. GM made this WAY too confusing. I read the Duramax supplemental cover to cover, they could have explained this better. I have a couple questions:
1) Everything I'm finding online suggest not idling these Duramax motors. Period. What are you to do archery hunting in 100 degree NV summers between hikes looking for AC, or the opposite, hunting/skiing in 20 degree weather wanting to sit and heat up for a spell? Am I really supposed to idle for 15 minute max periods with big breaks between?
2) Would then a high-idle set solve this be it 100 degrees or 20? Run high idle only? And for how long?
3) Many Many days during winter here, it's 28 or so degrees in the morning. Frost locked up windshields. Am I not advised to remote start vehicle and let it run 10 minutes or so to defrost?
This seems like a huge bummer.
I am not in the habit or do I live in an environment where I feel the need to idle for longer periods of time. It is rare but I can tell you my gas HD has shut off while idling after about 20 minutes.I would say the no idling rule only applies to idling in the 600 rpm idle - not under high idle. High idle is meant for idling for this exact purpose - idling for extended periods of time - it keeps your oil pressure up and flowing as opposed to settling down and causing wear and tear.
As far as cold starts, never drive a cold diesel. I wouldn't even remote start it. Start it regularly, let it run for some seconds and within 30 seconds switch to high idle for 10-15 minutes. As a matter of fact, when I started to use high idle for warm ups, my Regen mileage / time in between went up significantly.
You can probably run high idle indefinitely but you need to be monitoring for regens.
If you need a truck to idle for long periods of time you're probably better off with the gas variant.
Its been a long time since I checked high idle settings but vaguely remember setting it to going into high idle under certain conditions. Someone please refresh my memory.
You know I have every option in my truck; its all in my signature!I am assuming you are talking about the "elevated" idle that is available to be turned off or on under settings, on the infotainment screen. ECM controls it. It's free.
"High" or "Fast" idle (gm uses both words for the same function) is controlled by operator and costs $200.
Sorry, I don't see signitures on mobile. There are no conditions that need to be met to use "high" or "fast" idle. You know I have every option in my truck; its all in my signature!
