High Clearance Steps

Gm has been shipping trucks that should have electric steps with other types. I’m guessing this is to move inventory. My dealer had a few HD Denali’s delivered with regular steps.

The high clearance steps are $1145 VS the gm electric steps are an $1100 option.

IMHO I’d find another truck like the one you want with the electric steps. There are plenty of HD AT4s sitting on lots these days. I bought a 2016 without the $75 heated steering wheel option and felt like an idiot for not finding another truck with it.

Thanks for your input. I probably could have waiting on the truck but the steps are the only thing I would have done different had I built the truck, location of the truck, and the dealer did a great job making me feel like I got a good price so I pulled the trigger. Ha ha

I will try out the steps and if I don’t like them replace with lower steps and try to sell the high clearance. I don’t like automatic steps because I’ve seen too many that break or get stuck either from ice or worn out. I went to look at my neighbors 24’ AT4 they had the automatic steps and drivers side made a grinding sound, I’m assuming from a rock or debri? I quickly said no way to that.

I'm still debating on whether I like the high clearance steps or not. I like the clean, out of the way look but lower steps are definitely more useful for shorter people like my wife. Being 6'2" I don't have an issue using them but the one thing I've noticed is that I quite frequently step on the inside of the door jamb so I'm going to get that area PPF'd.

I’m sure the Electric can break or get stuck bc someone didn’t take a second to wash them out a few times a year. I’m on my 3rd truck and 250k+ miles having the electric steps. I’ve only had it not go down a few times but closed the door and it deployed the next time. Women love the electric steps.
You can’t buy the electric steps after the fact. Third party are a lot more expensive($2k) and do not work as well.

I appreciate the input as I am a new member.
Automatic steps may be better than I originally thought after your input. However I ended up getting high clearance on my truck that I am picking up Friday. - My very first new truck after owning a 2006 for over 14 years!!

I’ll see what the v’ife thinks as I don’t think it would bother me much while using the grab handle. I like the fact they help block rocks and are sturdy.

I had AMP steps on a 2016 and they were nice new. They never seemed to fit the truck square, the front motors filled with silt and broke, and passenger side rarely worked or quit ( I can’t remember).
Today there’s a lot more electric step competition. I would hope AMP has improved but you never know.

Can you elaborate on the ppf film for the door jamb? Pre cut or did you cut it out of a roll and do it yourself? Seems like something I would think about doing. Thanks

Search Car edge door guard or door sill paint protection. You can get it in clear, black, carbon fiber, anti slip (grippy), etc. Comes in a roll or precut per vehicle.

I have the high clearance steps on my AT4 and I like them. They provide access for my shorter wife and I can use them or not and be fine. They are a clean look. I had a 2022 Power wagon and the steps that came with it were fine but it did take away from clearance when off roading.

Thank you for your input, I haven’t purchased any other steps since I haven’t even picked up the truck. I’ll see how it goes for a month and let the wife make my decision…..

Funny that I found this thread. My AT4 is a month old and I liked how the high clearance steps looked. Then I picked up the truck and after a bit I realized that I don’t like them at all. For one thing, it’s got that non-slip coating like is in bed of the truck and it’s like sand paper when I scrape my leg against them stepping out of it while wearing shorts. I had learned to avoid that. But I didn’t like how high they were. I was giving a ride to my dear old mother who is in her 80’s and she had a real hard time getting out of it. So today I replaced the with them with the Westin R5 steps. They are lower and I really like them a lot more than the high clearance steps that came with truck. I wish I hadn’t paid extra for those mounted from the factory. These Westin are about halve the cost

I greatly appreciate your timely response. I wouldn’t have picked these steps but they are on the truck and that’s really the only thing I wouldn’t have chosen about the truck. I feel I will be in the same predicament as you regarding my dad, as he complains about the new 1500 being too high, not to mention the 2500. My wife will ultimately have the say as she will be riding in it often. I will look at the Westin steps, I have been looking at the GMC Accessory store and found a couple I think I will like.

Any plans for the old ones? I feel like I will think I can sell them quickly and for good money but more than likely will have a hard time.
