I got a call from my dealer this week saying my engine had failed the recall test. They said they’ve checked over 100 trucks and only two have failed – I guess I’m just lucky? They’re estimating about two weeks for the engine to come in and then another week for them to install it.

Has anyone else gone through this process yet? Did you break in your engine again? Any follow up issues after the engine was replaced?

I have not gotten a notice or anything about the engine replacement. But I will be asking my dealer about it when I take it in for oil change next week. Hopefully it won’t take long for you to get yours back soon

I’m still waiting for the vin letter which notifies me to bring it in. I’ve called my dealer 3 times since April about it and get the same story, wait until your number comes up. Mines an early 2023 truck.

That timeline is about what I’ve been told if I need an engine. My truck has 17,500 miles on it. Engine runs fine, fuel pump control module failed back in July but they fixed it under warranty. Truck is due an oil change by the monitor which is over time not mileage. It only has 2900 miles on current oil change. I just don’t drive it much.

Keep us posted on your progress with engine replacement. My dealer told me they had checked several so far and only 2 needed engines so far. One was a Yukon not a truck.

I had the pleasure of experiencing the problem with only 4500 miles . Took 6 weeks and two engines. See pictures
Since then no problems i’m over 42,000 and love the truck.

What was the cause for needing 2 engines? Yikes.

There is no such thing as car history.. things like engines just don’t appear except in the internal GM system.

As for time, remember an engine weights 1000# plus.. must come by freight truck, which takes at least a week. Call GM if you want them to help you expedite…. Open a case…

Carfax records all major events

Carfax does not record squat.. especially when they pay or is the dealer. If I relay on Carfax you are going to get burned. I had two transmissions in my navigator, no record on Carfax and no requirement to disclose upon sale. Carfax is useless almost a scam.

I had my engine replaced this past February. The mechanic told me no break in process was needed...just drive and change the oil at the normal interval. While I trust this mechanic (I do), I felt a safer approach would be to change the oil after 500 miles or so. At that same time, I had the dealership install a magnetic drain plug as the OEM is not magnetized. I understand this won't save anything from getting destroyed, but rather I look at it as I would a gauge on my cluster in that I use what it shows me to make decisions or try to get ahead of a situation that may lead to catastrophic failure. The plug was $20 or so on Amazon. I got that before they knew the reason why engines were failing, so that drain plug helped me a small bit in the interim. I know now that my new engine was built after the June 2024 cutoff, so I'm good.

I’m confused. You got a call? My test was done while I waited at the dealership, and I was told that if it failed (it passed) the truck would immediately be quarantined (liability) and I’d need to find a ride home.

I bought my 2023 AT4X about a month ago (it is used with only 11,357 miles) and changed all the registration with GMC so I could receive any of the correspondence and/or r2call notices. Nothing from them to date. 2 weeks ago I set up an appointment to have the oil changed and asked to have the test done, which they agreed to do. The day before I was to take the truck in, I needed to move it in the driveway, but it wouldn't start. Had it towed on a truck with dolly set up as it wouldn't go into neutral. The dealership informed me the engine was locked up, thus the no-start condition and they would be replacing the engine under the recall status. My rep said he was grateful this didn't happen while I was driving the vehicle as everything shuts down when the engine locks up, steering, transmission, everything! Imagine that at 70 mph or any mph! Get your trucks tested, I say even if you haven't received the letter. You can also go to the GM website for the recall to look up your VIN to see if your vehicle is in the group of VINS that need testing. I believe the dealerships will get you in to test if you ask for it when you get an oil change like I did.

My dealer won’t touch my truck until I get the vin block letter which I have not received yet. I’ve called them 3 times on this. 2023 AT4X with 17,500 miles on it. No issues to date with the engine. Just a fuel pump module failure back in July 2025.

I had my dealer searched my VIN (21') and mine did not come up in the recall so I was lead to believe I will not be included in the recall. No letter has been received at any point.
