I went onto GMC dealer site today for a camera issue for an appointment and L87 service option showed up, However, after selecting it and schedueling service, I called the dealer and they verified that GM has still not given to go ahead for remedy as of today. SA stated thay are still not sure what will be done. He did say they have received the scan tool, but no additional materials or instructions. Needless to say, the dealer is not happy. Just FYI everyone.

I'm not surprised. Back when this first broke, the word was GM was going to start sending out official letters to owners around the 2nd week of June. Guess we'll see if that holds true.

I was able to contact GM (emailed mary barra and it was forwarded to her executive support team) and they added my truck to the list to investigate. I was really disappointed by how GM rolled out the "schedule service now!" invite and then the dealers were unable to handle it so I googled her email and sent a note. Surprisingly it worked. Didn't want my family riding in this truck all summer on road trips with a risk! Although it's still a faulty engine, just with a bandaid.

I got a call from my dealership today
I have an appointment Tuesday morning to run the scan it will plug into the knock sensor and take a reading, they will then send the scan to gm and they will say pass or fail The dealer has already done a hand full of them on used dealer trucks for sale as they get it first
The service manager told me that every one they have done so far has passed inspection but he could not confirm that if it passes I will get 10 year or 150k miles warranty or if it doesn’t pass that they will give me a loner
I will let everyone know what happens

I am taking my truck in for regular service Monday. I was told by the Service Advisor that GM has not fully given them the approval to work on Customers units yet, but they have started testing or replacing their inventory on the lot.

He said they will look at the serial number and do a number of things. If the serial falls between x and x, the engine is automatically replaced.

If the inspection / scope reveals any issues, the engine will replaced.

If the inspection comes back ok. They will change to the heavier 0-40W and will extend the warranty 10 year or 150k miles from the in service date.

I appreciate all of the input here. I did receive a post card from my dealership a month or so back just letting me know that there is an issue. There have been no instructions regarding service or testing or anything else to this point. I did preemptively change out my oil to 0W-40 five weeks ago, and I'm sure the dealership will offer that up again a few months from now when they start reaching out to customers.
I have found this situation really disappointing, but if they want to give me a 10 year / 150k warranty I can probably live with that.
I currently have a 16 year old Chevy 5.3L truck in the driveway with over 250,000 miles on it, and it runs like a beast. I think I should be able to expect that as a minimum on every GM truck I purchase. I have a family member that has driven Chevy/GMC trucks for 45 years in the Oklahoma oil fields and he would put 350k-400k miles on those trucks before his boss took it away and bought him a new one. Those are my expectations.

@ThatGuy keep it in perspective.. less than 3% of engines are affected, a bunch have already failed. You will get a 10 year / 150k mile special engine warranty. My view - Drive the beast, see if u can blow it… (they go before 35k for the most part) odds are against you!

Just curious if anyone has around 100,000 miles on one of the engines under the recall. Or do they ALL fail before that point?

I have a 93K on my 21'. The engine build date is in the recall range as listed on the other thread.

Update
My inspection has been completed. It passed so as we all know they changed the oil to mobile 1 super car. But they do not have anything in writing about the extension on the warranty but GM customer service told me that it will be in their database, GM rep did confirm 10 years or 150k miles which ever comes first So call your dealer because they are doing inspections in Alabama. Roll Tide

I wanted to wait on changing my oil for the inspection but I was at 11% and didn’t want to wait any longer. I collected a little less then a quart in a glass jar and my used oil filter in case they want to inspect that. Probably less than 5k miles on the oil as I dont drive it much. I run Castrol edge full synthetic and ac delco filter. Mines a 22.5 with 22026 miles.

What year and mileage? I take it you didn’t have to wait to receive the official letter from gm?

2024 I got in November of 2023 15506 miles an I did change the oil at 15000 miles not knowing when my recall would be open and I have not received a letter from GM yet
