My truck will be in soon so I asked for a complete price breakdown. It included $50 for nitrogen. When I said please keep the nitrogen and green valve stem caps. The salesman came back with "Unfortunately all new gm vehicles are required by the manufacturer to have nitrogen in the tires there's nothing we can do about that".

Yeah......no. There is no real benefit to filling tires with nitrogen. Theoretically, nitrogen is more reistent to pressure changes brought on by variations in temperature and other atmostpheric conditions. But the reality is that for the general consumer....it's snake oil. Take your vehicle to Discount Tire (or any other tire retailer) and typoically they don't adjust tire pressure with nitrogen, which then introduces normal air into the tire, thereby degrading the nitrogen that's already there.

AND....it's YOUR vehicle. GM can't REQUIRE anything. Dealerships are free to choose certain things with regards to maintenance. Oil for example. The vehicle may call for certain specifications, but nowhere does GM specify the utilization of a certain brand. Case in point....the service advisor is full of shit and you should probably find either a different advisor or a different dealer.

I'd definitely push back. $50 for that is nonsense. When I bought my truck a couple weeks ago there was absolutely no dealer add ons or requirements. Now if it actually has nitrogen in the tires, I'll never know, but there was no charge for it and it was a cheaper vehicle than any other with the same packages/options.

Also of note, if the dealer ever says you have to get our tint/protection/exenteded warranty. You can ask to see the contract for that particular product and in the contract it 100% says "this product is not required to purchase" or something similar.

I'm well aware that nitrogen in tires is snake oil and air is 78-79% nitrogen. Just surprised he went with "required". He has since backed down from the required part but not the $50 part. I'm getting a great price.....

I see that on their web site every vehicle has it and $1100 in doc fees. That offsets their discount but they do advertise a heavy discount. I'm wondering if it's real.
The discount is real and if I have to pay the fees it's still worth it. Just trying to figure out if I have some leverage to get the fees reduced.

You can always ask for a breakdown of the dealer fees and what is taxable. Anything that is taxable is negotiable. They should have these broken down anyway, however "dealer fee" may be 800 bucks but it should be above or below the tax items line.

Well, fortunately what you’re breathing is 78% nitrogen It’s such a joke. All it is is dry air with no moisture and doesn’t change with temperature as rapidly. Even aircraft tires you can use nitrogen or regular air. It doesn’t matter.

The only time I used nitrogen was on the race bike. On a truck? Absolutely stealing from the customer.
Unless you’re racing for a multi million dollar industry, nitrogen in anyone’s tires is 100% pointless. Just check your pressure a few times a year.
