Good Morning ,...

Our 2021 GMC Sierra AT4 would not start 2 days ago on it's first attempt ?? I waited a few minutes and tried to re-start the truck and it turned over with no problems on the 2nd attempt. The truck only has 385 km currently. There is extensive bulletins and notifications regarding an item described as a "Bent Trigger Wheel" on the 3.0 Diesel engine. Has anyone else had a similar NO start experience?? I did have the truck at the dealership yesterday for a recall for a software upgrade regarding the radio and at that time had them investigate this occurrence. The NO start issue does not throw a code so they could not provide an explanation for this issue at this time?? It is an un-nerving feeling to listen to the truck turn over for 10 to 15 seconds without starting before the start up sequence times out??

Regards … Rick C.

I had EXACTLY the same issue on my 2021 6.2 gas. Just cranked and cranked. Left it for an hour and then it started right up. 2,500 miles on mine. Called dealership service department and they acted like I was nuts. Hasn’t happened again= yet! I will see if it happens again- then I will be smart enough to video and take to dealership . I did find this on another forum:

I purchased my truck in March 2021. I have 11.5k miles on it now.
The "crank no start" has occurred 8 times thus far. I have taken the truck to the dealer, and the dealer continues to say GM has not pushed a fix out for the issue. The GM bunch is telling me to take it to the dealer. Virtual circle.
Very frustrating.

Being an engineer, it sucks listening to it turn over and over without firing. 15 seconds is like an eternity. I am waiting on the day that the starter does not time out and it just keeps turning over until it saps the battery.

Mine done it several times then when I took mine in for my free scheduled service at my buddies dealership they reflashed the computer and it’s done it 2 times since and that’s been a while ago I’m almost ready for another oil change. But one thing I think I’ve noticed and it hasn’t done it again since I started doing it when I get in my truck I don’t just push the ignition button I let the truck come to life I guess you say all the computer stuff starts doing it’s thing , I’m sorry it’s hard to explain but it hasn’t done it one time since I do that so I’m not a believer in anything doing with engine itself I think it’s the computer has a problem but I’m just a guy that lives in the country and railroads for a living what do I know haha.

Hello ... my 2021 AT4 has endured the no start issue 3 times in 7800 km ( Canada) ... no luck at the dealership to troubleshoot for me ?? ... when you say you let your truck come to life ... do you lightly touch the start button and wait for the screen to light up and then push the start button to actually start your truck ... just curious ... regards ... Rick C.

I don’t push the ignition button until the truck wakes up when the gmc logo flashes up on the radio screen then I’ll start it. I haven’t had a problem since but it might be luck to who knows.

Rick, I have tried every combination I can think of to try to determine if it something I am doing incorrectly, i.e. some magic sequence that causes it.
It has been over a month now without an incident using the same approach that Carman mentioned. It has never happened to me using the FOB. Still at 8x and waiting for the next occurence.

Seems like every time it done it I was hopping in and pushing the button right away but since I’ve started letting the truck computer wake up it hasn’t done it since but like I said that might be just luck but my buddy that owns the dealership and his service department feels like it’s a computer issue not anything mechanical I guess you say.

Good Morning ,... I know it has been only a couple of days ... yet I am following your advice ... I will get back to you in a while ... thank you ... as a back up when I sit in the truck during the startup sequence ... I have my phone set to video to record the startup just in case to show the dealership ... so far I have not recorded a crank no start issue ... regards ... Rick C.

Over on the Duramax forum, there is a thread about this and they said a new ECM update came out a couple weeks back. Several who have had the issue went and got the update. They said the startup now sounds a little longer than before, but it does crank up.

The only downside is that this problem is so hit and miss, no one knows if this is a permanent fix. You can go 12k miles before having the first crank, no start.

Thanks jonlsu.
GM care and the Dealer both called me this week saying they had a TB on this for an update to the ECM. I plan to take it in and see if that fixes it.

I took my 3L AT4 to the dealer yesterday for the ECM update. Jonslu - what they are saying about longer to startup is exactly what I noticed. Just guessing, but It seems to be spinning over about 20-30% longer before firing up. I had several stops to make around town after the update, so I did 3 tests of just jumping in the truck and pushing the start button before everything wakes up. Nothing in those 3 tests. Maybe this fixes the issue.
stoone - several of the service and sales team drive SLT and AT4, they say it happens across 5.3, 6.2, and 3L (as LamboTexas noted), and they have experienced it firsthand. GM just has not experienced it firsthand, at least from what the lady in customer care stated. Perhaps she does not drive a truck...
