Hadn’t planned to buy an AT4…hadn’t planned to buy new again. With 4 kids we sold the travel trailer for a motorhome and then realized we couldn’t tow any of our 3 vehicles (Audi A7 AWD, Escalade AWD, LML Duramax 4x4…too heavy).

Sold the Duramax and started looking for a 1/2 crew cab. Requirements were 2-speed transfer case for flat towing and bench seat in front for family of 6. The more we looked at 2014 and newer, we realized prices didn’t make sense to buy used. We also sold our Duramax for more than we paid after logging 60,000 miles over 3.5 years so can’t complain.

On Sunday wife tried the door on an AT4 at the dealer lot and it was open. We crawled around and realized how much bigger the new cab was. We test drove it yesterday and it has the 5.3. I had a 2010 Sierra Denali AWD with the 6.2 and an 08 with 5.3 before that.

I know I’ll miss the insane torque that my LML had (towed 12,000 travel trailer up a grade without even shifting). I’m leaning towards waiting on a 6.2 on the next week-10 days but am wondering:
- How is the 5.3 rated for 9,200 lbs while the 6.2 is only 8,800?
- Both have the 3.23 and 10-speed. Will the 6.2 hold a higher gear with more power and balance out the fuel economy?
- Real life mpg on either so far? My Sierra AWD 6.2 would get 15-16 commuting and 19 highway while our Escalade is 14 and 17.

I don’t anticipate regretting a 6.2 purchase and I realize the 5.3 is all I need.

For the base AT4 vs the other options, I'm already seeing things that I would not choose on a base AT4 and but other options that I think should be standard equipment. Since I will be removing the console to install the jump seat, the base trim is what I need in order to avoid things like Bose sub, wireless charger, etc. It will be the most straight forward swap. However, I would need to add one of the upgrade packages to get things that should be standard on a $60K truck like front/rear park assist. In my case, if I added the required package just to get park assist, it would include other things that I don't want/need and with any of the packages, I will end up with a square hole in the carpet once the center console is removed.

Get a 3.0 😀

I have the 2021 6.2 with 3.23 10 speed: My gas mileage averages 14 city 17 hwy. Average is a little skewed because 2-3 days a week I have horse trailer or flatbed trailer hooked up. Can’t speak on the 5.3 as I have no experience with one. I do love the 6.2

I’ve got the 3.0 baby Duramax same torque as the 6.2. It’s quiet, smooth efficient engine. Before my lift and wheels and tires I averaged around 24 mpg now I’m down to around 22 mpg. That’s back roads to work. The one road trip we took I got 27 mpg.

I'm averaging 17 in the city with the 6.2 L, but I have a heavy foot. That's while running 87 octane. I didn't need the 6.2 (hell I didn't need the truck), but I love it.

Picked up a 2021 AT4 Friday. Short box, onyx black, 6.2 with no other packages.

First impressions:
- Very happy I opted for the 6.2 vs the 5.3. I had an 08 CC with the 5.3 and it was great at the time. Then I bought a 2010 Sierra Denali AWD with the 6.2. That truck was the best truck I’ve owned and I logged 190,000 miles without an issue before selling it in 2018. My last truck was a deleted/tuned LML and pulled like a train. Of the options in the AT4, the 6.2 is the only one close to the feeling of my LML Duramax I just sold. While it doesn’t have the torque, the speed and throttle response is great. It is 100% noticeable compared to the 5.3 AT4 we test drove last Monday.

- Fit and finish…what the hell? Not super impressed with the gap between the dash side panel that covers the fuses and the dash itself. Also the right side of the steering g wheel Colin cover will not stay snapped together. The housing thing seems like has been an issue on every GM vehicle I’ve had though.

- For being a base AT4 without package upgrades, it has everything I need. I had a sunroof on my last 3 trucks (08 SLT, 10 Denali, 13 Duramax SLT) as well as rear power window. Not having it does not bother me since I didn’t use the sunroof much. The things I get as a base model are CarPlay (don’t need Nav because of this), heated/cooled seats, more features and lights than any previous vehicle. Things I think should be included in the base trim would be park assist and universal home remote.

- Any of the packages would have included Bose which would have meant a square hole and removing the sub when I swap the console out. So the base AT4 is perfect from that standpoint. Again, park assist would be my only gripe and home remote would be a nice to have.

- Love the 6.2. Only have 50 miles on it so far but I averaged 20.5 on the DIC on both trips to/from work so far. I reset it before each. My commute is 18 miles with 70 mph for 8 miles, then 45 through town with 5-6 stoplights, and finishing with 30 mph and 4 stop signs. I averaged 18.4 with my LML on the same trip.

- Tailgate seems very useful. I’m 6’2” and could get in and out of my 2500 bed just fine but this makes it easy and helps the wife if needed as well.

- Ride quality is nice. My 2010 AWD Sierra was amazing but I’m coming off of 3.5 years of driving a 7,700 lb diesel so this thing rides like a dream.

- Keyless fob is great for the door lock/unlock. Not sure about the tailgate…if I have a free hand to hit the button I can likely open the tailgate myself.

Congrats and enjoy!

congrats, I suspect the lower towing capacity is weight related between the 6.2L and the 5.3L. I just towed a 20 foot aluminum car hauler with a 2006 diesel sprinter 2500 camper van (22 feet long) on it with my at4. I'm guessing the total weight was between 9k and 10k lbs and I never had any doubts with the power from the 6.2L, the 10 speed, or the trailer brakes which were all awesome. The scary points only happened when the outer edge of the road would dip from pot holes or winter damage and the top heavy sprinter would start rocking etc.... But on flat ground...no issues. We just took it slow and it went relatively smooth. 15 hour day in the rain.....but from Rochester NY to Burlington VT and back. I didn't miss my 2500HD at all.
