AT4X has softer suspension. Which means more rear end sag while towing. Besides that, the AT4 and AT4X should be the same. AT4X has front full lockers, but that won't effect towing.
I had a 2020 AT4 with the 3.0 diesel. Towed very well. I put the Airlift 5000 airbags in the rear to help with the sag. The 3.0 had plenty of torque and power.
I now have a 23 AT4X. Stock, the suspension is much softer and nicer than the AT4, but it had more sag while towing my trailers. I am a contractor so pull a variety of trailers that weigh in pretty hefty. I put Airlift 5000 airbags on the AT4X also and that helped a lot. I also installed the Airlift onboard compressor, so I can wirelessly adjust the pressure in the airbags. I drive around with 10 to 12 PSI without a trailer, with a trailer (depending on the trailer) I set the airbags between 25 all the way up to 50 PSI sometimes.
The AT4X has the 6.2 gas engine. It is quicker/faster than the 3.0 diesel, although that little diesel was no dog. The 6.2 is definitely faster while passing, etc, of course. Both engines have the same torque, so towing seems about the same. Maybe a tad better on the 6.2 since it has more HP, but overall about the same as far as towing. Fuel mileage was about 5MPG better on the 3.0 diesel vs what I get with the 6.2 gasser, but the difference in price between gas and diesel (diesel is about 70 to 80 cents more a gallon where I live currently), the cost to drive for fuel is about the same in the end.
I think the AT4X is fine for towing, but I think airbags or leaf spring helper system is not a bad idea for the X if you get one and tow with it.
