I’m wondering what thoughts are on changing the oil after the first thousand miles.
I know synthetic oils last a lot longer but there’s a lot going on those first thousand miles getting rings seated and brand new metal to metal wear going on. Lots of fine metal dust swirling around in that oil.
Whadda’ think?

It certainly wouldn't hurt anything. But I didn't bother. I think that thought process is carried over from older vehicles and maybe even performance built motors that actually have break-in oil in them for the first start up and is usually recommended by the builder. I did my first change at 7k and didn't notice anything unusual. If you're doing it for peace of mind, I say go for it. But I personally haven't seen any data that suggests its completely necessary.

Thanks. I agree with ya about the ‘break in’ oil from days gone by.
After reading all the replies here and talking with a mechanic, I’m just gonna wait until I hit 5K for the first service.

Hello, I have 2021 1500 AT4 with 6.2. I changed my oil at 1500 miles and it was black as can be.
running Toyotas all my life ive never had anything but clear clean oil. I called dealer and they said it was ‘normal’ for a new 6.2 to have black oil for the first few oil changes.

Thats the oil from a brand new 6.2 driven very careful during breakin at 1500 miles.

No wait until at least 3 thousand miles they do have break in oil in them and GM recommends you wait until then
Please provide your souce for that information. The owners manual does not say that. What dealership service and/or service department? Thanks

I am a old school guy but I purchased a 2020 1500 5.3 and at 1000 miles I change oil but the key to it is to cut your oil filter apart and check for any metal in the oil media inside the filter and that assures the engine is completely cleaned. The oil filter is more important than the oil in my opinion.

I have a 2021 2500 AT4 6.6l changed mine at 1200 miles. It was black as can be. Now at 2400Miles it’s a lot clearer.
